The similarities between the two is how a person chooses to do it. Dieting could be done by excercising and eating healthily, or choosing to only eat once a day (or none at all) and starve themselves. Alcohol is the same; it depends on how much one chooses to drink.

A friend of mine has done both dieting and drinking alcohol in just a year. She started with a dieting plan to lose weight, but soon got off track. Instead of eating healthily, she decided to drink alcohol; that was mostly all she did. Her friends stepped up and found out she was dealing with depression. She had kept everything to herself and chose not to burden anyone. Talking with someone made her feel a little better, and that's when she decided to let people know what was wrong with her. She was insecure about herself. She thought alcohol could help, but really, all she needed was for someone to tell her she's beautiful inside and out.
