There wasn't many changes in the lives of teenagers in Singapore before and during the Japanese Occupation. Although before the Japanese Occupation teenagers learnt their own native language, the schooling and education system didn't change. But they were forced to learn Japanese and not their mother tongue or native language which was rather tough and hard for them to understand. They had to choice but to follow under the Japanese rule. They had lost their freedom and the normal lives they once had once the Japanese occupied Singapore. There was also a great amount of fear in teenagers as they were apprehensive of being taken away as slaves or 'Comfort women' for the Japanese. The Japanese we able to brainwash and manipulate many of them into thinking that the Japanese cared about the people and wanted better lives and jobs for them when in reality it was the exact opposite. Those that opposed the Japanese would be severely punished if they did not respect them and bow in their direction. They had to abandon their past lives and do what they could at all costs to survive and provide for their families.
