Discipline: Entertainment
Summary: The Chinese actress Liu Yifei is selected to act Mulan. After interviewing about 1000 actress from all over the world, she becomes the one. Liu Yifei is a really famous actress in China, people call her "fairy sister" because of her pure and innocent. Also, Liu is the brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier and Pantene.
Response:
I heard about the story for Mulan since I was really young. She is the hero in many Chinese girls' mind. The first carton I have ever watched was Mulan. I love the way Mulan live, she is brave and strong. I always wish I could be a girl like her someday. I still remember a incredible famous and popular Chinese poem called Mulan Poem. It was written around 5th century in China, the poet described the story of Mulan, and I finally learned this whole poem when I entered to middle school. It is about 400 words, I memorized them word by word since I really like it. As I heard Disney is going to film Mulan again I was worried because I was afraid they might ruin the classic. However, I was so surprised when I saw the new about Liu Yifei. She is one of my favorite Chinese actress, I have thought about her to be the perfect person for Mulan, but I never thought the dream would ever come true. Anyway, the movie is coming in 2020, hope Liu do a good job in it.
DQs:
1. Have you ever heard of Mulan? If so, how do you like her?
2. Have you ever watched any other Disney carton? If not, what others cartons that you have watched when you were young?
3. How do you think the idea of using a real person to act a carton character?

1- Yes, I have heard of Mulan when I was young. I have watched the movie several times, which was one of my best movies since it has a deep meaning. This movie has taught me how desire could make everything possible. Also, the movie has changed my way of thinking since whatever weaknesses I have, it can be overcome by hardworking like what Mulan did.
3- I believe that the idea of using a real person to act a cartoon character is interesting especially if the actor is from the same culture that is represented by the character, so that convince the people who are watching the movie since it seems closer to reality.

The story of Mulan has inspired a lot of people and it is inspired me as well. It is fascinating how a young girl sacrifice her life not only for her father but also to save her country without being scared, which teach us that morality comes in the first place. On the other hand, disney is surprising us by the new stories that some of them could be real. Moreover, by reading the article I felt that Disney really cares about the audience since it searches between thousands of people to find the best actor in a professional way.

After I read the article, I think it is very interesting when it talks about the international celebrity. I took a film study class this quarter. In the quarter of studying of this class, we learned there was a very famous Chinese celebrity calls Anna May Wang. She was born in California. However, it was very interesting that Hollywood actress wouldn't recognize her as U.S. actress because of the Chinese blood inside her. Thus, Hollywood directors always arrange asian rolls for her. In her acting, she has always been given asian rolls. Thus, I think this article it also interesting. Because it mentioned that in deference to the Chinese culture, they finally choose a Chinese celebrity as the main character. When it comes to culture difference, I think film directors always like to use culture stereotypes to enforce their visual effect of the movie.

3-For me personally, I always don't like the idea to turn a cartoon in real person or turn a novel in a real person act. Because for me, always when I watch a cartoon or read a novel, I would have my own understanding inside my mind and picture that understanding by myself. However, when I watch it turn to real person act, it seems never touched my own imagine, which would always disappoint me in some way. Because I already have my own understanding of this novel and cartoon, and however the director shouldn't always have the same idea of mine, it would disappoint me when I watch a different understanding and will led me to an another direction of the understanding of the cartoon, which is a feeling that I really dislike.
