In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Wilson proclaimed that November 11th would be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory".

On May 13, 1938 the approved Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) recognized November 11th of each year as a legal holiday to honor Veterans of WWI.

Rebranding

On June 1st 1954, after WWII and the Korean conflict, the 83rd Congress replaced the word "Armistice" with "Veterans" in order to honor veterans of all wars.

Creation of the Veterans Day National Committee

On October 8th of 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which called for national observation. It also created the Veterans Day National Committee, and appointed the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman.
