B. The biggest challenge was finding more sentences to write to make the paragraphs longer.

C. The amount of time that passed surprised me the most because I wasn’t expecting for it to go by fast.

D. I would not recommend to do it next year because it was really stressful and a lot to do.

2. The biggest challenge was making the essay. We had a lot of drafts and a lot of feedback and I could barley catch up with the pace.

3. How long this took. This essay took over two weeks if I’m correct.

4. I would do this essay again next year. It is a good way to learn about banning books and the creativity people put in their essay and bento boxes.

B. The biggest challenge was coming up with an in depth analysis for 3 of the books. I spent hours recognizing and looking into each and every quote.

C. What surprised me most about the essay was how overwhelmingly hard it was. I think I underestimated it.

D. Yea I put Descendants, my favorite.

This paragraph talks about the differences in a different community. For example ¨Blood splatters from his back¨ (Stenberg 23) this quote refers to a black young man who was just shot by an officer and blood splatters from his back. The book mentions the black community discrimination and by banning the book there silencing the black community. I believe if there's shooting in a book it doesn't mean a child will replicate it because the root of violence is more from copying a parent or not getting enough attention at home. A student or child should read or be taught about this book because this book talks about the struggle of a black person in their community. They should be taught about this subject because a child In a different community can look at how others are being treated and it may give them a different perspective at how others live. This will help kids be even more mature than they are and help determine what's wrong in certain situations.

            This topic talks about how a bad child can't influence kids.For instance ¨The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind and another ”(Sendak 1-2) in the first picture Max is hammering a nail into a wall and in the second picture Max is chasing down his dog with a fork. I believe the author showed Max acting bad because to show what bad kids do and just an example of what kind of things a bad child will do. I know that a child wouldn't stab their dog because they love their dog very much and wouldn't want to harm someone or something they love.

This subject talks about how a student feels on book bannings. In particular “ the overwhelming majority of students were opposed to book bans in any form”(The learning network) the book shows the majority of students disagree with book banning. Students disagree with certain book banning like books about race, sexuality, violence and even gender. It shows that students have a mature enough state of mind to know that a certain book shouldn't be banned. If students feel a type of way in certain books being banned, this shows that students do have a mature mind and know what's right and wrong in book banning. 

To conclude, just because a book has a lot or even a little of violence and a child has read or even learned about it doesn't mean that children will do that bad behavior because a child has a mature enough mindset to know the difference between good and wrong actions and the root of bad or violent behavior is from bad parenting.

D) I would recommend the essay itself, but not so much the bento. Making the bento itself seemed like more of a project for a grade than something to actually help students. The essay already did that job.

In 2023, America witnessed a ban of nearly 16,000 books, which was an unsettling trend.  According to research done by PEN America, 21% of all banned books include topics of racism or address issues of race, while 40% of banned books include protagonists who are people of color, and a whopping 41% of all banned books include LGBTQ+ themes. This goes past just the “protection” of children. These are topics children will naturally encounter, and shielding them does nothing good. In reality, children need to be exposed to more mature topics in an age-appropriate manner because they are often more capable of understanding than we give them credit for.

Adults often feel the need to protect children from emotional changes, though this often results in protecting them from things that can help these kids grow emotionally. Following this further, quoting Robert Taibbi’s article How much should you tell your kids about adult problems Elementary school age children are “naturally more self-centered & aware … without clear information, they are apt to make up their own stories about what's happening.”  Children are keen at sensing changes in the behavior of their loved ones, and due to the natural curiosity of children and a lack of foundation for change, they may jump to conclusions, often picturing a reality where they have done wrong in the eyes of their guardians, which can lead them to unnecessary stress and paranoia the information could have prevented.

Expanding on this topic further, the quote “We accept the love we think we deserve” from the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower emphasizes the reality where individuals tend to end up in relationships where they are in danger or are hurt per their self-perspective. When people think they are unworthy of love, they are more likely to seek out an unhealthy relationship. This quote can also be applied to children in the sense that children only know what they are taught. Children who are raised in the presence of unhealthy environments grow up thinking that it is normal, and vice versa. Exposing children to topics that seem to be “unfit” for their age, such as what healthy boundaries are, how to say no, and what a healthy love should look like, can help them develop a healthy sense of self. 

 Without the guidance of an outside voice, they could fall into the toxic mindset that The Perks of Being a Wallflower was referencing. 

Children’s literature can serve as a potent tool for teaching children about mature topics, the quote, “He makes me breakfast, takes me to school, picks me up, and yesterday we went for a bike ride around the park. I think he needs a break,” subtly suggests that the father is the only parent. The mother's absence is neither explicitly stated nor emphasized, leaving room for interpretation. This lack of direct acknowledgment presents a mature theme, parental absence,  in a way that is accessible to young readers. By integrating such themes naturally, rather than sensationalizing them, the book allows children to engage with complex topics in an age-appropriate manner. This approach acknowledges that children are often more perceptive and capable of understanding mature topics than they are typically given credit for. It is also a good show of inclusivity by validating the experiences of children who may come from non-traditional family structures.

In conclusion, banning books that address race, LGBTQ+ themes, and complex emotional topics limits children’s ability to engage with the real world. Children are more capable of understanding mature topics than we often think, and exposing them to such content in an age-appropriate way can help foster emotional intelligence and a healthy sense of self. Rather than shielding them from reality, we should empower them to navigate life's complexities, preparing them for a diverse and challenging world.
