- The Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. Slaves initiated the rebellion in 1791 and by 1803 they had succeeded in ending not just slavery but French control over the colony. The Haitian Revolution, however, was much more complex, consisting of several revolutions going on simultaneously. These revolution were influenced by the French Revolution of 1789, which would come to represent a new concept of human rights, universal citizenship, and participation in government.
- In the 18th century, Saint Dominique, as Haiti was then known, became France's

- Discontent grew under Porfirio Diaz's presidency as a result of his policies favoring the wealthy and entitled elite. In 1908, Diaz appeared to be receptive to changes in Mexican society's present politics that would have been achievable with the introduction of more democratic methods. He also appeared unsure about his presidential run, which would have been his seventh in a row. Francisco Madero saw an opportunity and seized it, establishing himself as the leader of the anti-Diaz campaign. He also decided to run for president, which irritated Diaz, who ordered Madero's arrest and then proclaimed himself president once more. When Madero was freed free, he demanded the release of

- Central America is the region between modern-day Mexico and South America, which today consists of the countries Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Before the region was colonized by the Conquistadors of the Spanish Empire in the early 16th century, Central and South America were home to various groups and polities of indigenous peoples, some of which, such as the Aztecs and Incas, had empires of their own. After Central America was colonized by the Spanish Empire, it was ruled along with Mexico as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, one of four viceroyalties created by Spain to rule the New World.

- Native Americans in South America had been rebelling against Spanish control since the 1700s, with mixed outcomes. It wasn't until the 1800s that widespread resentment fueled a push for independence. José de San Martn aided Argentina in gaining independence from Spain in 1816. He then teamed up with Bolivar. However, intense rivalry prevented that dream from becoming a reality. Gran Columbia was soon divided into three countries: Venezuela, Columbia, and Ecuador.

- When Brazil declared its independence on September 7, 1822, it had traversed a truly unusual path. Once a conventional colony, it had evolved into the seat of the Portuguese empire by 1808, only to be declared a kingdom, equal in status with Portugal, in 1815. The Portuguese royal family, fleeing before the Napoleonic troops that had entered Portugal in late 1807, were the only European monarchs to ever see their American colony, and they were the only ones to rule their empire from the colonies. Last but not least, for much of the nineteenth century Brazil was the only American colony to have become an independent monarchy. Yet independence, declared in 1822, did not fully signify Brazilian sovereignty.
