In today’s society, a large concern for many parents includes the manner in which sex education is taught. We can find many articles on legislation, school board decisions, and protests to change or maintain the current sex education curriculum throughout schools. The question now is; when has a school gone too far?

This leads us to Mater Lakes Academy charter school in Miami, Florida. Here we find a teacher throwing an X-rated after school birthday party. This birthday party was composed of children as young as eleven years old, a dance teacher, and X-rated party favors. These X-rated party favors included a hat with a penis attached to the top, and a cake in the shape of the female form. As a result of the party a young girl that attended was distraught and upset to the point in which she was unable to sleep. Her mother stated in an interview with the WSVN station “She couldn’t sleep last night. She woke up crying.”

The ethical issue that is posed in the article stems from the idea that children should not be exposed to extreme amounts of sexual games, toys, and ideas that are targeted for adults. Often sex shops and businesses are off limits to those under the age of 18 years per state and local zoning laws. Therefore, the ethical question now is whether or not it was appropriate for a teacher to expose children under the age of 18 to X-rated party favors to include sex toys?

In this current event we can apply normative ethics which is defined as “study of prescriptive accounts of how we ought to behave.” (MacKinnon, 2018) By doing so we are understanding that the there are expectations for teachers in a leadership position over children. These expectations are based on normative ethics where we expect teachers to behave in a professional manner. The ethical theory that is associated with normative ethics is Non-consequentialist. By definition this theory does not focus on consequence which this narrative did not focus on, however, it does focus on intentions. What were the teacher’s intentions? Were there any rules to deter this type of event from happening?

Sex education curriculum is a very versatile subject that can pull various opinions from administrators to parents. In this instance the teacher involved took what could have been an innocent birthday party into a sex themed party. Accounting for the consequences of our actions prior to acting on them can prevent situations similar to this one. Theories that focus on the consequences of our actions such as consequentialism is a step to deter events such as this.
Reference
MacKinnon, B., & Fiala, A.
