         <description><![CDATA[<div>English speaking kindergarteners enter with a vocab of approx 1000 words and add another 1000 words per year in school.&nbsp;<br>"Knowing a word" involves receptive and expressive ability both orally and in text.<br>ELLs need to learn the high frequency words first to begin communicating.<br>For success in school, there are thousands of low frequency words to "know".</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Use word charts with subject specific words for current or upcoming lessons. (provide examples of the words in context)<br>-Using cloze activities with possible word banks. Omit the target vocabulary words. Can vary according to level (may or may not have the correct tense or form of the word).<br>-use small group conversation about words and invite investigation of new words that will come up in the next lesson topic. <br>-shared reading, however, this is only effective when the ELL knows 90% of the language in the text.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Need to instruct students on strategies to use to learn meanings of words.<br>These strategies include:<br>-making inferences from the context (using known words, pictures, etc)<br>-word analysis (using the word chart strategy include affixes with examples)<br>-use of dictionaries (picture for early learners, bilingual for older students with developed skills in their L1)<br>-instill a love of reading (can expand vocabulary and enhance understanding of sentence structure.</div>]]></description>
