The pirates also realize that without Saul the pirate house becomes really pirate-like, dirty and smelly. They realize that Saul is a good pirate in his own way. Everyone though Saul was a bad pirate, when in truth he was the one doing all the housekeeping and keeping the house clean and the pirates healthy. He then decides to pick on a friend who is smaller than his size, Gomer. Gomer cries, but soon Thomas realizes that he is crying because of a true bully, the baddest-to-the-bone bully he's ever seen. I thought the concept of Thomas trying so hard to become a great bully was very funny. He was trying so hard to act so big and strong, after thinking that he would not be able to make friends. I loved how the book all throughout the story showed how though Thomas was truly persevering to be a bad bully, he was not a bully at all, from the start to the end. Moreover, Thomas ended up saving Gomer, a friend smaller than his size, rather than bullying him. Also, the two became friends, Gomer even stating that Thomas was a terrific friend.
