There are a lot of ways that had been created to extract sources like natural gas from the earth's crust that enables us to live in comfort as we are today. One of the method used to extract is by hydraulic cracking or more known as fracking and it is one of the most controversial method used by companies which can lead to a lot of disasters. Put simply, it is a way to recover the natural gas from deep layers inside the earth. The method is known since 1940.

The process of this method includes drilling deep into the earth where they have detected the natural gas. After drilling it, the will direct a high pressure water at the rock to release the gas. The porous rock is fractured by water, sand and chemical at high pressure and allows the gas to flow out of the head of the well. This method can either carried out vertically, or horizontally. The drill can be also be extended if there are still remaining natural gas found that same exact spot. The drill can also be

The method is known since 1940 and since that time, there has been a fracking boom that happened especially in USA. This is because the natural gases is exhausting and resulting in the price of natural gas to increase steadily through the years. This method had attracted a lot of companies since it profitable even when the method is complicated and expensive. In the USA alone the method is used over 1 million times. In other countries there are no exact times the method is used but there are some countries that allows this method. In the UK, more than 100 companies are given the license to do this kind of method.Over 60% of the natural gas in the USA is obtained using this method.

The amount of fluid used to pump into the method is about 8 million liters of water and that amount equals to the average usage of 65000 people daily. Also they pump several thousand tons of sand and 200000 liters of chemicals to help the method. The mixture will now penetrate into the rock layer and creating a tiny cracks. The sand that is pumped is used to prevent the cracks from closing up again while the chemical acts as an agent to compress the water, kill of bacteria and dissolve mineral inside the rocks. Next the majority of fluid pumped out again.

Fracking fluid has a lot of chemical and since soil property is permeable, it allows the chemical to pollute the surrounding clean water.

What are the risks with this methods

One of the risks is the contamination of water source that we used to drink or do any daily activities. Not only that fracking use a lot of fresh water in addition the water is contaminated and is highly toxic. The contamination of the water is so severe that water treatment plant is unable to clean the water thus enabling us using the water. The risk can be prevented but due to neglect, some of the water sources has already been reportedly contaminated. No one knows yet what will happen to the enclosed water since there are no studies that had been experimented. Also the chemical that is used in this method is hazardous and can lead to a lot of health problems if exposed. There are about 700 chemicals composition that is detected in this method. Next risk is the greenhouse effect. Methane is a gas that is 25 times more potent compared to carbon dioxide is released into the air and effects such as global warming may increased in the future.

One of the disadvantages of this method is it consumes a lot of cost to handle it. Also, it consume a lot of energy to operate the method. Not only that, the drill holes can be exhausted and more drill holes will be needed to built. About 3% of the extracted natural gas will escape to the environment. In conclusion, there the disadvantages will balance out the advantages and the effects can happen. The future of this method is unforeseeable in the future.

While what is in fracking fluid can be harmful to the environment, it is not properly contained, there are new alternatives that could reduce the amount of waste that is typically associated with hydraulic fracturing.
As a new report or researches suggest that the treat to water resources that is posed by fracking can be mitigated with a new technology that’s already being used in Canada and could come to American gas fields in the near future: liquefied propane gas or also know as (LPG). The gas fracturing does not require the large amounts of water and reduces the need for what chemicals are used in fracking.
The scientist explain that using LPG also does away with the need to pump the water back up to the surface after fractures have been made.
