1. The Most Broken Rule

Commandment 10: Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.

This by far has been the most egregiously violated commandment of all. Society has become extremely polarized in recent years for myriad reasons. Whether through propaganda, misinformation, unconscious bias, tribalism, or many other factors, people are at each other's throats. The worst in people tends to come out. Especially online, we can be rude, hateful, dismissive, and abhorrent. At the same time, the internet can be a forum for charity, benevolence, and unity. Too often people choose the wrong road and violate this simple commandment which asks us to treat others with respect. Studies have shown that online bullying is a big issue and may lead to depression in young people. It is the easiest commandment to break which in turn makes it the most broken commandment.

The advent of the internet has allowed humans to interact in new ways that were impossible only decades ago. We hide behind computers screens with impunity and behave and talk in ways that we would not imagine in a face-to-face "real world" scenario. Not to mention it is very quick and easy to post something on social media. These rapid changes in the way we communicate have lowered our inhibitions. People often do not think about the outcome or who is on the other side of our messages.

3. What Can Be Done

I for one do not believe in excessive censorship, but rather in the marketplace of ideas. Good ideas will drown out the bad. Therefore I do not believe that the solution to this problem will come from changes in policy.
We as individuals need to learn how to interact with other people when we cannot physically see them or do not know them. How can we do that? Through educating people about the impacts of their harsh and disrespectful words online. This can happen anywhere, from schools to the internet.
New technology can actually read the connotation of what we are saying. Perhaps it can offer suggestions to not click send or post when it sees that the tone of the message is very negative.
The key is raising awareness and coming to an understanding as a society which will take time.
Additionally, aggressive bullying should be reported, documented, and assessed for legalities.
