Greeting students at the door to answer any individual questions allows students to be ready by the time they enter the classroom. As students enter the classroom they put their water in their cubby and head over to morning circle. During this time I review classroom agenda, update students on any specific changes in schedule, and use this time to build on my procedures on a weekly basis. This helps avoid procedure overload.


I've seen many of teachers implement this at my school site and feel it not only is a great way to prepare students for the day, but it also helps build community and allows for social emotional learning.

A procedure that I've seen work has been one where students are able to independently access the bathroom pass if it is available. Let me specify.

  • There are two push lights placed in the back of the classroom, each with a bathroom pass hanging over them (one for girls and one for boys).

  • When a student needs to use the restroom they will push the light for it to turn on and grab the pass.

  • When they return they place the pass back on the light and push the light for it to turn off.

  • This allows the teacher and classmates to be aware at all times if someone is using the bathroom.

  • This procedure also helps limit the amount of times a teacher gets interrupted during academic instruction, as students ask to use the bathroom.
