Legalizing marijuana has gained a lot of support throughout recent years. I chose this as an example because it is more heard on the news and in the headlines in the past years to be legalized for both recreational and medical use. It used to be seen as unacceptable but recent years have changed that view. In the chapter, it states, "Our nation's history includes all kinds of social movements, from the colonial drive for independence to today's organizations supporting or opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, and legalizing marijuana" (Macionis, p. 530).

Tiktok is an app almost every youth and adult have on their phone and takes up most of people's time with endless scrolling due to many entertaining videos. One thing that has gotten more popular during the past year during the pandemic, was the rise of fashion and fashion trends on the app. This relates to the chapter where it states, "People's tastes in clothing, music, and automobiles, as well as ideas about politics, change often, going in and out of fashion" (Macionis, p. 530). While more people follow a certain fashion, a trend is created and more people try to achieve those looks.

Structural Functional Perspective: Modernity as a Mass Society

Referring to the Structural-Functionalist theory to modernity in mass societies, it is implied that compared to the past, these societies are less connected interpersonally and have weak kinship. I chose this meme because it was both funny and applied to the topic. According to the text it states, "A mass society is highly productive; on average, people have more income than ever. At the same time, it is marked by weak kinship and impersonal neighborhoods, leaving individuals to feel socially isolated" (Macionis, p. 539). I connect this to the meme because it is being asked who wants cold water, however, no one will pitch in to put that water in the fridge.

Social Conflict Perspective: Modernity as Class Society

I chose this picture because it shows the 'Pyramid of Capitalist System' and this connects to the chapter stating, "Class-society theory follows Marx in claiming that the increasing scale of social life in modern society has resulted from the growth and greed unleashed by capitalism... Under capitalism, people are transformed into commodities: a source of labor and a market for capitalist products" (Macionis, p. 541). The rich get richer off of those who are less fortunate through capitalism and this creates inequality.

Symbolic Interactionist Perspective: Modernity and the Individual

Modernity can affect one's self-identity and/or the development of that identity in both negative and positive ways. I chose this photo because this chapter mainly talks of how modernity affects an individual and it all centers down to self-identity and that usually pops the question of "Who am I?". In the chapter, it states, "However, mass-society theory suggests that so much social diversity, widespread isolation, and rapid social change make it difficult for many people to establish any coherent identity at all" (Macionis, p. 542).

Postmodernity

Postmodernity to this day is still unclear and compared to modernity and premodernity, it does not meet the expectations individuals may have for the future. The messed up squiggly lines under postmodern compared to modern and premodern is simple but explains the meaning of postmodernity even without context. In the text, it states, "Members (and even leaders) of a postmodern society are less confident about what the future holds" (Macionis, p. 546).

Modernization and Our Global Future

Ian Goldin talks about navigating our global future and states, "But there is an underbelly. There are two Achilles' heels of globalization. There is the Achilles' heel of growing inequality -- those that are left out, those that feel angry, those that are not participating. Globalization has not been inclusive." (1:16). This connects to the chapter that says, "But jump-starting development in the poorest countries of the world poses greater challenges, even where dramatic change has occurred, modernization involves a trade-off" (Macionis, p. 547). I chose this video because Goldin analyzes the contributions to what may be the global future and how inequality is still created because worldwide modernization would be hard to achieve because that trade-off exists, in other words, change comes with a cost.
