The battle of Gettysburg was considered the most important war of the American Civil War. The battle was fought from July 1 to July 3 in 1863. In Soldiers Heart, Charley gets shot at Gettysburg in the shoulder and thinks he's going to die. Charley stole some guns from dead people.

In the end The Thirteen amendment was passed and slavery was abolished. The Bull run is one of the first battles of the civil war and it is really important in Soldiers heart because this is Charley's first battle. Charley doesn't know what to so he doesn't fire his rifle.
