Orwell was most influenced to write the novel by his observation of the Nazi regime’s policies and its leader and his primary objective was to show the horrors of future totalitarian societies to persuade the audience that these societies should not be accepted. One of the horrors of the totalitarian governments in the novel 1984 that is reflected in current society is the concept of mass surveillance and both governments abuse this surveillance technology to maintain power and control.

In today’s world, we are constantly being watched by the government and private companies such as Facebook which mirrors the telescreens found in the world of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, that was influenced by the reigns of Hitler and Stalin, alongside World War Two, which he wrote in order to to inform and warn people on the dangers of totalitarianism and how terrifying it could get.

Many factors contributed to the creation of the book, like how Orwell's tuberculosis could have been the most significant influence of his gloomy, desperate tone and with this tone, Orwell was able to attempt a warning for the audience of what was yet to come with a totalitarian government while the readers were progressively able to develop social media's idea of maintaining a universal presence in society's lives.
