In this TED talk, Ms. Barrett talks about how you can't really detect emotion in a person. This relates to Guy because on the outside he seems one way, but on the inside he feels completely different. Also she says in this video that emotion is a prediction that you make, and in the novel, it seems like Guy Montag makes predictions about situations that lead him to believe something that may or may not be right.

People Relying on Technology excessively

People in today’s world rely on technology way too much. Instead of communicating with people with talking to each other, they just text or hide behind a screen. In the novel, there are laws that couldn’t be broken. It says “That’s against the law” (Bradbury 5), and that means in this book that you aren’t allowed to do specific things, for instance reading or even owning books. And this relates to today’s society because technology is widely accepted by the people in this world. Also the novel says “Patience Montag. Let the war turn off the ‘families’”. Our civilization is flinging itself to pieces” (Bradbury 84). This could have to do with today’s society because some people do not accept the fact that technology in general is becoming more and more common. And maybe one day with patience, all people will accept technology. Even if technology isn’t in our best interest.

Technology Causing Depression and Anxiety

Technology in today’s society can cause mental illnesses such as Depression and Anxiety for multiple reasons. One is that you get too attached to your phone and you wonder and get anxious if someone will text you. Or maybe you text someone and you get a reply that you may or may not want to hear and you become depressed. This relates to the story because there’s a part where Montag seems anxious about something due to the fact that he thinks that something bad is going to happen. It says “Montag got up quickly, his heart pumping, and ran down the hall and stopped at the kitchen door” (Bradbury 15). That sentence alone is illustrating anxiety due to the fact that his heart is pumping and he’s running down the hall. And this shows some imagery because when Bradbury says this, you’re getting a picture painted in our mind that he’s moving quickly and his heart is pumping. And this indeed is showing foreshadows something traumatic is going to happen, especially when it says that he stopped, stopped at the kitchen door. Another important point is that in the book, it talks about how that they’ve never seen a man killed in war, but they’ve seen a person jump off a building. It says in the novel “I’ve never known any dead man killed in war. Killed jumping off buildings, yes” (Bradbury 91). This quote demonstrates a set tone for the story by saying that. This relates to this particular topic because maybe you see something on some form of technology and you can get depressed on any level.

How Technology is Causing Depression and Anxiety

My research illustrates that technology is indeed causing depression and anxiety in our today's society. The article explains how technology is causing many kinds of mental illnesses, especially depression and anxiety. It says “An analysis of the results showed a link between frequently multitasking with different kinds of media and depression and social phobia” (Greenhaven). And this quote shows that they did an analysis on this problem we have in today’s society. Also that when you multitask, it causes you to be more depressed due to the fact that you have many things on your mind. Another point is that when people are on their phones, they’re disconnected in a sense from society. People text so much nowadays, and they don’t really physically speak to each other, which is in fact unhealthy for your social skills. In another article, it says “Mental disorders increase risk for communicable and non-communicable diseases“(Harrison). So this means that because people are practically glued to their technology. And it’s causing people to be less sociable than a “normal” person would be. In addition, another website shows how sleeping can in a sense cause mental illness. In this article it says “Sleep deprivation affects your psychological state and mental health. And those with mental health problems are more likely to have insomnia or other sleep disorders” (Harvard). All of this means that a lack of sleep can cause mental illness that could include anxiety and depression. But maybe the reason that people stay up so late is because of their technology, specifically cell phones. And there’s really no point to be on your cell phone. For one you’re staying up for an excessive amount of time which is unhealthy for the body in general. Also the fact that someone is on their phone, most likely not doing anything with much purpose besides maybe causing themselves depression or someone else feeling the same way.
