Mary Warren, servant girl to John Proctor, came in with a deposition saying the girls were pretending to be under the influences of spirits.  Judge Hawthorne interviewed Warren and said, “You say you never saw no spirits, Mary, were never threatened or afflicted by any manifest of the Devil or the Devil’s agent” (Hawthorne 98)

Mary replied, “No, sir.” (Warren 98)

The court called in Abigail Williams and the other girls to ask them if they were indeed pretending.  The girls denied what Mary Warren stated, and in a twist of events, the girls began to experience spirits.  Warren, becoming panicked, since the girls were repeating Mary’s words and seemed to be under the influence of spirits sent by Mary Warren.  

The meeting room was driven to madness and Mary Warren began to accuse John Proctor the he made her spread lies.  

 Here is what John Proctor has to say to this “They’re pretending, Mr. Danforth! … Lies, lies” (Proctor 107)

Deputy Governor Danforth told Mr. Proctor earlier in the court session, “Mr. Proctor, this morning, your wife send me a claim in which she states that she is pregnant now.” (Danforth 85)

“My wife pregnant!” (Proctor 85)

“There be no sign of it-we have examined her body.” (Danforth 85)

The members of the court proceed to state that she will have one month to start showing signs of pregnancy.  If not she will be killed.  Danforth also said that if she is pregnant she will have one extra year to live.  

Many people in the courtroom do not believe that she is pregnant and that she is just using it as a scapegoat to give a little longer to conjure of a spell to get out of the jail.  John Proctor has some interesting words about the case at hand “In her life, sir, she have never lied. There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep my wife cannot lie. I have paid much to learn it, sir.” (Proctor 103)
