According to the World Economic Forum, one in five expeditions to the top of Mount Everest will result in death. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world above sea level. It's allure has attracted climbers for decades. And even though it is deadly, many still attempt the summit. In my research about Mount Everest, I learned about what it takes to get to the top, the different paths people take to the summit, and the dangers people face.

To plan a trip to Mount Everest, you need to have training, and a lot of money. The journey to the top of Mount Everest takes a fair amount of experience. Guides recommend that hikers need to climb 3 significant mountain peaks before tackling Everest. However, you do not need to have climbing experience to be issued a permit in Nepal. To prepare for Everest, hikers go on varied exercise routines. Most involve lots of cardio (with a weighted backpack) and strength training. Some mountaineers swear by swimming as the best form of preparation. Also, the cost to reach the top ranges from $30,000 to over $100,000. This includes: supplies like oxygen, tents, hiking boots, an experienced guide, airfare, insurance and a permit.

The journey to top of Mount Everest takes a fair amount of time and typically hikers choose from two routes to reach the summit. According to experts, climbers typically spend two months trying to reach the summit. You need to spend 10 days at base camp to get used to the altitude. Then, climbers spend about two more weeks climbing to other camps up the mountain, and another two weeks waiting to take the summit and climbing down the mountain. Furthermore, there are 18 named routes to reach the summit. However, most climbers choose from two. The South Col Route goes through Nepal is more crowded and climbers can be airlifted by helicopters at certain points. The Northeast Ridge Route is through China is less traveled and base camp can be reached by car, but helicopters cannot access any part of the route.

There are many dangers on the climb to the summit of Mount Everest. One of the risks of climbing Mount Everest is altitude sickness. The lack of oxygen can cause nausea, dizziness, vomiting and even death. Guides say that the biggest danger on the mountain is climbers themselves. They don’t have the knowledge or experience to know when they should stop ascending the mountain and return to base camp. Most deaths occur on the descent down the mountain. Likewise, the terrain of Everest can be deadly with low temperatures, wind and sudden storms. However, weather forecasting has vastly improved climbers’ ability to avoid dangerous storms.

To climb Mount Everest, climbers must have experience, money and time to reach the summit but along the way, they will face many dangers. Researching Mount Everest was fascinating. Seeing all the difficulties that climbers must face and the time and cost associated with the climb makes me wonder why climbers desperately want to reach the summit. It is incredibly dangerous. Locals and guides are more likely to be put in harm's way as they rely on foreign climbers' to pay them and make choices about reaching the summit. Climbers have every right to make their own choices to reach the summit but I can't help at wonder if at what cost?
