CONECTED BUT ALONE BY SHERRY TURKLE

Digital technology has truly made a great impact in our life as Sherry Turkle stated in her Tedtalk. It eases the way of communicating with other people especially to our loved ones whom we are apart from, but it weakens the connection. When we want to talk to someone we chose sending text messages through our devices rather than having a conversation with them personally. According to Sherry, we do this because we can control what we say in text messages unlike when we are having a conversation wherein we cannot edit what we have already said.
Based on my own experience, I strongly agree with what Sherry said because I prefer having conversations through text than personal. It is not only because I am able to express my ideas and emotions more in texting but also I am not good in making conversations last when talking in person. Since the innovation of our mobile phones started, a lot of people are interested to it to the point that they already got addicted. Some of us cannot sleep without our phones on the bed side, we carry our phones wherever we go and I can somehow say that we cannot live satisfyingly without it. I have also observed that whatever we are doing we always tend to look or check on our phones everytime.
A line of Sherry Turkle that caught my attention the most is when she said that "Technology does not only change what we do, it changes who we are." Looking back to the times when we were young and technology was not yet advanced, we used to play with our friends outside and there we feel connected with each other. However, as observed in today's generation, most of the children do spend their time with their gadgets and they tend to misbehave when they are disturbed. Some of them even cry when their phones are captured from them. They seem to be different people when dealing with gadgets. They do not care on what is happening around them for what matters is they are being satisfied playing with their gadgets. With this situation, we can see how did the technology changed not only what we people do but also who we are.
Another situation where I felt related to is the picture of Sherry's daughter together with her friends being together but not actually being together. One time, I met with my friends whom I have not seen for a long time. I thought that we are going to do the things we used to do before like jamming and sharing each other's stories. Unfortunately, I was wrong because all we did is had a picture together and we spent the rest of the time looking at our phones until we parted ways.
Digital technology is beneficial in many ways, however, we should know our limitations in using it in order for us not to get addicted. We should use it to strengthen connections with other people instead of weakening it. In addition, we should chose to take advantage of its benefit rather than letting its disadvantages destroy our connection with people.
