They both are a metaphor towards someone feeling "trapped". Like nobody understands them. In both the song and the poem it continuously says the caged bird. The caged bird is the symbol of somebody trying to become free. They are using their voice to try and get someone's attention. Sadly there is nobody there listening to them. Nobody there able to help them. They don't realize it but there are people who understand how they feel.
