I went to a brand new elementary school (at the time). In retrospect, this afforded us a lot of advantages - new equipment, enthusiastic teachers, higher-than-average community income levels, fewer social problems, etc.

In high school, one of the defining features seemed to be STREAMING. Choosing whether to take "academic" or "applied" classes - even though I was clearly on track for "academic" classes that would lead to university, it still struck me as odd to be thinking about the future that early. I thought I was going to take science or kinesiology in University, but my science teachers sucked so I took an interest in the social sciences, and the rest is history.

In elementary school, I had friends and I liked them, but I didn't really find my niche. In high school, I loved the social element so much that I looked forward to going to school every day. I didn't care about the classes as much as I just wanted to hang out with my friends. It's pretty intense thinking back - how close people are as youth, and that those types of friendships are few and far between as adults.

Sports were a big part of school for me in elementary and high school. My parents strongly encouraged me to join every team, so I did. I loved volleyball and gymnastics, but sometimes I just wanted to relax! I was totally overwhelmed in grade 8 - preparing for high school, playing 2 rep sports, all school teams, and hitting puberty?! Talk about TOO MUCH! I felt like I couldn't relate to my peers anymore, and I wanted to take a step back and be more "normal" in high school, so I quit gymnastics.

I never thought I would be a teacher! I did not plan to be, and I never aspired to be one. I fell into it, and I'm glad I did.
My perspectives on education have changed a lot, and are constantly changing. Now, I can see so clearly the impact of privilege on my own education, and I have a much more keen appreciation for the impact of politics and policy on education en mass. Now, it's something I'm passionate about. I believe in free, public education and I hope that one day it is funded for all post-secondary students. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it there!
