Women or just females in general weren't allowed to go out of their home unless they were accompanied by their father or husband. Since Father was taken away, and he was the only male in the house, no one had gone out. That means they ran out of food and they had no more water or supplies for living.

Since the incident had happened at the market they knew that they had to find another solution to the situation. The figured that the only way out was going to be to transform Parvana into a boy to be able to go in and out of the house to get supplies and to be able to work (because females weren't allowed to work).

Since Parvana was now a boy she was able to go out and work. She now took over her father's job which was at a market. His job was to read and write letters to people because a lot of the people didn't get a good education and didn't learn how to do either of those things. She would lay a blanket on the floor and wait for people to come by for her to read or write their letters.

One of the days Parvana was at work a young "boy" with tea had fallen over on her blanket. When Parvana saw this young boy's face she realized that it was really a girl.

Parvana and her friend Shauzia knew they were able to earn more money by having a different job. They wanted to buy trays and put food on them to go to people instead of people having to come to them to buy their items. They didn't receive any extra money with the jobs they currently had so they had to make money a different job. In order to obtain more money they worked digging up bones from graves which payed a lot better and they had the chance to obtain extra money to buy the trays and food to sell.
