Keeps us from forgetting our language and culture by singing in our language. It also teaches other people from different countries of how we speak. It grounds children identity in a way that our elders have lived before being colonized and our language and culture were almost taken away, but we haven’t and that’s really important to keep seeking elders advice and listening to them tell stories, and learn new words in Inuktitut. seeking their knowledge is very important. -Jean

Drum makes a beat that connects to song (Ajaaja) are played by elders or older people while the young once are learning the song and how the drum goes. Children learn quick song and once they get their mind to what they want to learn, they can learn to drum. Inuit piqqusingi are important and it is starting to be used more which is great. (We get to re-learn what our ancestors used to do)

-Debbie

The Inuktitut songs and the Inuit drum ground Nunavut children's identity by serving as tools for cultural and language, connecting them to ancestors, and fostering a shared sense of community and belonging. The children learn about their history, cultures, values, and language. Storytelling and drum dancing, also strengthen family bonds and teach social lessons.

Here is a photo of my late grandmother Lena Nuliayuk Kingmiaqtuq I’d like to share. I am named after, and she always sang for the drum dancers of our community. She would also be invited into our school for story telling. She was such a great role model for our children, youth and everyone else.

-Annie

It is so important to sing and understand Inuktitut songs, to keep our language strong. And be proud of our inuuniq.

Inuit drum is also important, they were more for boys to use, but both boy and girls uses them now. They are really interesting, makes great noise. Inuit songs and Inuit drum song are from our Nuna. If you are walking on Nuna and think of what you see, and make it into a song. That’s how they use to make drum dancing song.

-Joan

It is very important to listen to Inuktitut musics both singing and drumming, and understand the beat. Singing and storytelling in Inuktitut helps children learn and maintain their ancestral language. Participating in theses traditions gives children a sense of belonging and shared identity with others, which builds resilience and pride

-Aileen
