He later moved to Waterford where he was apprenticed to his uncle, Michael Rice. Edmund grew up with 6 full blood siblings; Michael, John, Richard, Patrick, Thomas, William Rice and two stepsisters; Joan and Jane Murphy. He and his brothers were home-schooled through a member of the small community of Augustinian friars, Patrick Grace in Callan. His parents were Margaret and Robert Rice. Between 1762 and 1844 there were multiple political, economic, and social changes. It’s known that Edmunds father and tenant farmer, Robert Rice rented 175 acres of land from a friendly Protestant landlord in the city of Callan. Later his sons replaced the once hired hands and helped around the farm. After being apprenticed by his uncle he became one of “Waterford’s most successful and respected citizen” before settling down in the city and living with his uncle. Edmunds parents were owners of a comfortable home that wasn’t luxurious but rather nicer than the shacks and huts other Catholic Families owned. There were multiple secret societies including papists and anarchists, protesting high rents, wretched living conditions, recurring famines and high tithes paid to and alien church. Also, during the Era of Edmund Rice, the Parliament was in session, providing £112,000 – or $204,320, to education for young Catholics that were found begging on the streets to bring them up as Protestants and then when he was 14 – in 1776 – the American Colonies declared their independence. There was also huge emigration to large cities of Britain in search for employment in the factories. In 1798 Edmund witnessed the aggressive attempt to fight against the Act of Union and saw how they denied Catholic Emancipation.
