This shows that Appa is very focused on his community and culture, completely uncaring of the other bigger corporations that could obscure his store, because his store is reserved for his community to come to, because that is all  that really matters to him, including his family.
Just like how various other community-owned stores are valuable to the people, and that makes them good amongst their community.

RBHS is just a school, but it has a long standing history and connection with the community, making them inseparable. Places and buildings can have a lot of meaning, so keeping RBHS running was a very important decision in preserving the parts which bring our community together as the surrounding city changes. And in the context of Choi's convenience store, his shop has a small but very important connection the community.
