The meaning in language in isolation, in the language itself.

This is important because it is basically the connotation of a word,

like how 'rain' makes you think 'wet' and possibly 'cold'.

Grammer

The system, or rules, of language. This encompasses syntax and word structure.

An example of bad grammar - I going to the store.

The grammatically correct version of the same example is - I am going to the store.

Pragmatics

The context and meaning of spoken language.

The same as Semantics with the difference of focusing on the spoken words and \takes into consideration the beliefs of the speaker along with the relationship of the people involved in the conversation.

The way the parent (or whoever is reading) explains what is going on in a picture.

If you have a picture of a dog jumping, the describer might be 'the little dog jumped really high'

Comprehender

A question designed to make the child think further about the story.

After you read a part of the story you might ask 'What do you think the little girl will do now?' to see what the childs prediction is.

Preformance-Oriented

The reader reads the story all the way through and thenen asks questions.

After you read the story to the child, then you would ask what he/she thought of it.

Linguistics
