Oil (vegetable oil or baby oil), White Washable Paint, Alka Seltzer Tablet, Cup, Jar, or Bottle

STEP 1: Add 1 cup of water to the vase or large jar.

STEP 2: Mix in 1 tsp of paint (acrylic glitter paint works well too)

STEP 3: Then pour oil in almost to the top of the container.

STEP 4: Break the Alka seltzer tablet into pieces and drop one at a time into the oil. You may want to add additional pieces for a blizzard!

What keeps a polar bear warm when their natural habitat is so harsh? This super simple polar bear blubber experiment will help you feel and see what keeps them warm! 

To start off this experiment, how do you think polar bears stay warm when they are swimming around in the icy arctic water? What keeps them warm if they don’t wear clothes like us. Nobody is telling them to zip up either!

YOU WILL NEED:
Large bowl
Ice Cubes
Vascaline or Lard
2 plastic baggies
Duct tape
Food Colouring (optional)

Fill a bowl with ice cubes and water. Place your hand in the water- does it get colder the longer your hand stays in the bowl?

Now, for the messy part, fill one plastic bag with vascaline.

Place one hand in another bag and the other hand inside the blubber/fat filled bag.

Seal the tops with duct tape so water can’t get into the bags.

Make sure to move the fat around so it covers your hand completely.

Fun Fact: 4 inch thickness of blubber keeps polar bears toasty!
