I was thinking about having the kids give mini tours of their homes and share a few things in their homes that are important to them. They could create videos on SeeSaw or FlipGrid to share with their classmates and then all students should watch & respond to 5. This is a great way to learn about each other in our home environments and get to know the kids on a different level. These are like virtual home visits :) I think seeing students in their home environments is a powerful tool we can use as teachers!

Connecting with a family member:

Watch this video on conversations (We had a Second Steps lessons on conversations, but this is a review.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjBO1bONqgc

Make a phone call to a family member. You can call a grandparent, great-aunt, uncle or any other family member you wish to call. As you have a conversation with a family member be prepared with a few questions to ask them. For instance, you could ask them what would you do after school when you were a kid? How would you communicate with your family or friends without a cell phone? What was your favorite thing to do when you were 9-10 years old? Where did you grow up? Did you have any chores to do at home? Let them share some stories about their childhood.

Write down stories and details that a family member is sharing with you. Writing down notes will help you compare and contrast when they were 9-10 years old compared to your life as a 9-10 years old.

Lastly, complete the digital venn diagram about the differences and similarities of your life and your family members life when they were your age. Then post a video or recording on SeeSaw about what you learned and how life was the same and different years ago compared to today.

My kindergartners will be building a fort on Friday. It is part of their choice board. Then I attached a meditation video to watch and do in the fort. I had a mom tell me her child loved hearing his classmates voices on seesaw. I love your idea Jess. I may do something like that too. I also did a seesaw feelings check in.
