1. Out of the three issues we have explored this week, which has had the biggest NEGATIVE impact on the African American community in Baltimore? Why do you think this?

2. Would D. Watkins agree or disagree with you? Pull one piece of text evidence to support your answer.

I believe that unhealthy food has had the greatest negative impact on the African-American community in Baltimore. I understand that there are other issues that exist for this community, but if you eat unhealthfully, it will shorten your life and limit your future prospects.

D. Watkins describes this issue perfectly in his vignette, "What's to Eat?". He mentions, "We are marching and protesting against police brutality, but biscuits and gravy and macaroni and cheese are probably killing us at a more alarming rate." (99) Even if we figure out the solutions to police brutality and negative influences of technology, we still are bound to a life of illness because of what we eat and where we live.

I believe community violence and police brutality has the most negative impact on our African American lives in Baltimore city. These things been going on for a while and the people its happening to are sometimes innocent even if they weren't no one deserves that much brutality and violence.

In the book D.Watkins states in " cops kills Blacks in America" he mentions that " He was that twenty-four-old kid from north Caroline who took ten shots because he needed help from a cop" (111) . We aren't suppose to fear the police but most African Americans do because it seems as if they want us to be extinct. the police brutality and violence is so negative and harmful people are scared to call the police now days for help.

i think that unhealthy food has more negative impact on African- American community in Baltimore. I say this because the foods we eat are causing other reasons for deaths like heart attacks, heart diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

D. Watkins talks about somebody dying from a heart attack from the food she was eating on page 99. " She'd serve fried everything, from fish to string beans, yams extra syrup, different types of cornbread, and diabetes-flavored tea, and topped the meal off with cake and ice cream for everyone. Eventually, her diet caused her to have a massive heart attack." This quote shows that because of the unhealthy food she was eating it had a cause of death which it caused her to have a heart attack and die.

On pg 110 the officer says ''Step out of the car, son let me search it, and i'll let you go''. This quote reveals that the police thought he was hiding something .
My opinion i don't think the officer has to check the car because D. Watkins paperwork checked and so the officer had the feeling he had drugs because he was in a target drug zone.

i believe that social media has a big impact on kids just as adults in not only Baltimore but the whole world. every day as soon as you long onto your tweeter, Instagram and snaptchat you'll see at least one girl crying about her breakup another one praising her perfect relationship and the best one for last the F**K LOVE AND F**K RELATIONSHIPS girl or guy, fights getting hyped up, foreheads being roasted and that one person that's LITERALLY begging for more followers. i also believe that social media is a big burden in classrooms and in life because it seems like that's kind of a world for some individuals to get away from the real one and as much as it has a great impact sometimes, it can also be tragic. i agree with d. Watkins as he says " i check my Instagram as much as my students, if not more.... i monitor my followers, and i hopelessly double-tap ridiculous pictures that i don't really like with hopes of the ridiculous picture poster returning the favor..."(92) it is true that a lot of the aspects in society have impacts just as big but in a lot of situations it all begins on social media.

other than police brutality and technology i believe that food has an impact on kids and adults because what you eat and how much of something you eat has a huge impact on you because it can effect how you live the rest of your life. In the book D Watkins talks about how there is no places in the neighborhood that sells healthy food and also that we are killing ourselves every time we take a bite out of a burger or sub and also a chicken box we are shortening our lives bite after bite. On page 99 says" Big mama had her family over to her house for huge soul food dinners every week. Shed serve fried everything, from fish to string beans, yams extra syrup, different types of cornbread. Eventuall, her diet caused her to get her legs chopped off and eventually died. After that the family reunited and ate the same food that killed Big mama.

I believe that the impact of community violence and police brutality is a major problem in the state of Maryland; And in the city of Baltimore because everywhere you look or every time you watch the news, there is always somebody either getting getting severely shot up, getting stabbed to death, suffering tremendous damage to body parts or maybe even sometimes fighting can be a huge problem in people communities, while others may believe that these are not huge problems, If they were to really sit down and think about what has been going in our every day life, maybe they can get the bigger picture of what OUR life is like!.

Ziar'a Gill- I believe that unhealthy food has the greatest impact on the African-American community. I believe this is the greatest impact on our community because it causes many deaths and illnesses that we may not be able to afford, in addition to that the only food accessible in any low income community is food that has been made in a factory or injected with tons of chemicals.Farm fresh item's aren't an option in our local grocery and/or convenience stores.''I learned that the hormone filled chicken and the canned vegetables from miss Angie weren't good for me , just like subway sandwich's with those genetically modified vegetables and fresh baked bread that contains the same foaming agent found in yoga mats.''pg.98 ''The risk of diabetes is 77% higher among African american's non-Hispanics white Americans.''I believe this is bigger than the other issues because it's killing our community at an alarming rate and its based off of our income and sometimes our skin or abilities to complete tasks. Based on my info stated above i can proudly say that D.Watkins will agree with my statement.

I say that because it takes away from the social lives, and can get them in a lot of trouble for the choices some of them make. I think D. Watkins can agree with my claim due to one of his quotes in his vignette that reads.."they spend hours aimlessly scrolling, absorbing fake and altered realities, praising the lives of celebrities when they could be enjoying real life, participating in rich discussions, and learning."This quote by D. Watkins, is interpreting that social media and technology is taking away from kids social lives, and brain washing them which relates to my claim above about this situation.
