My Parents

My parents, together, have become an exemplary balance that is needed in life. By this, I mean my mother is determined, independent, and a go-getter, while my father is patient, hardworking, and giving. These traits together make up who I am today and who I aspire to become. As I was growing up, some of the things they taught me were the importance of being fair, surrounding myself with good people, and setting goals for myself. By putting myself into group activities and constantly pushing myself to my highest potential, I developed the habit of always wanting to be the best. However, I don't mean that in the sense that I believe I am better than those around me. But, instead, I made myself the type of person who takes AP courses instead of normal ones or finds opportunities where I can be of assistance to others. With all that I have adopted from my parents, I hope to become that same accessible source of guidance to my own kids.

My Grandmother

My grandmother is the most selfless person I have met in my 17 years of being alive. Everything she has done has been for the benefit and well-being of others. Although this is such an important characteristic to have, it is difficult for me, especially when most things revolve around "survival mode." I was taught to put on my air mask in case of an aircraft emergency before helping others because that's what is the norm. However, she was taught otherwise. When I think of this trait of hers, I remember the night I spent at her house at around age two. I begged her to sit on the ground with me, without knowing that her knees were unable to handle that strain. She sat anyway because she knew it would make me happy. At that young age, I did not realize all the consequences that were caused to her but rather appreciated what she had done for me. I aspire to develop that selfless and generous personality that I have witnessed throughout these years.

Jesus Christ

As an Armenian, our religion is a sacred and important part of who we are. To me, Jesus Christ will continue to be a model with behaviors I want to follow. As Christians know, Christ died for our sins so we could be forgiven, which truly touches my heart. With age and increased maturity, I became more aware of what the Bible had to teach me. The most important lesson I learned was forgiveness, which has become a part of my behavior. Holding a grudge and not being open to forgiveness only brought more problems, so I knew it was time to change that. Ever since that change, I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders, because of how open I started to become.

My Teacher

It's very difficult for me to find the one teacher who makes me enjoy coming to school each day, but when I got lucky. During my freshman year of high school, when I entered my English class, I met the teacher who would change my school experience. Now, in junior year, I am back in her Publications class, where we make the yearbook and publish articles for the school newspaper. Our relationship developed through these three years, but it has become one of the best parts of my life. She is among one of the most busy teachers at our school, as she manages so many activities and classes, yet she still shows up ready for her students. I look at her with my jaw dropped because she still manages to do her absolute best with everything going on. My life is similar to hers, as I have a lot going on always. Whether it is extracurriculars, sports, schoolwork, or my social life, I am occupied at all times. Being in her class and spending more time with her has made me realize that I need to make better habits for myself, so that I can stay under control, no matter what.

Armenian Pop Singer

Lilit Hovhannisyan is a well-known Armenian pop singer who, to me, is a perfect example of what it means to be an Armenian woman. Not only is her music enjoyable and relatable but seeing how she holds herself as a woman is something to look up to. Both at concerts and in public, she holds herself high and with poise, which shows her self-worth. Just like any pop star, her goal is to be admirable to her fans, but getting to know her through her music made me realize that being a female singer is more than that. Each lyric in her songs has a deeper meaning that listeners can relate to their lives, which allows me to start seeing the "in-depth" part of things. To add, the first time I saw her performing live was when I was still in the 3rd or 4th grade, but I vividly remember her documentary that was projected before the show. It showed her going from nothing to one of the most popular singers in our Armenian community. It was inspiring to see that dreams, aspirations, and goals do lead to success. So, with that, I added all the behaviors that Lilit radiates into my lifestyle.
