Today, I learned that we are not born with a national identity. It changes over time. We need a national identity to understand internationality. It is important to accept change. Our values grow when we learn about other cultures and choose what is important to us.

Today I have learned a lot about Guadeloupe and been sadly surprised that there is still a lot of racism on the island. We have also learned that internacionalism starts with us - when we know and build our identity, which is changing all the time, we are able to think and feel international.

I had a great day today. We shared our professional and personal experiences. Guadeloupe suprises. It was interesting to hear about history, about Christopher Colombo and the geographical features of the beautiful archipelago. I really liked the exercise of personal identity, which changes with our exeriences and perspective.

On our first seminar day, I learned that Guadeloupe is surrounded by two seas, namely the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, I became more aware that my personality changes throughout my life. By the way, the word "international" contains the word "nation“.

I learnt today that national identities change because we change. People don't have borders and we can change a lot by speaking our minds and talking to each other. The different languages that children speak in the classroom can be valued, for example, by greeting each other in a different language every morning so that all the languages spoken in the class have their say. Rejecting new ideas is missing the opportunity to learn something. "If you are different, you can enrich yourself."

Today was the first day of the seminar. Not only did we have the opportunity to get to know each other, learn about the history of the island, but we also exchanged ideas about the culinary specialties of our home countries during an international lunch. During this, there was also a lot of discussion about the different school systems. Additionally, we learned how our personalities change over time and how that affects national identity.

As our instructor pointed out, a game of defining your identity in several individual words or concepts makes an effective icebreaker for any team-building or educational session.

It may also make a starting point for a journey of self-discovery or a curricular (re-)design. What makes our identity? Is it an accident of birth, a labour of love of our family, a structure built for us by society or one built by ourselves? In an increasingly globalized world and in increasingly multicultural educational systems, we need to strike a balance between protecting and preserving identities and enabling them to look at themselves from the point of view of others.
