As part of the accelerated program, we were studying Algebra I, and I struggled immensely to understand the concept of solving an algebraic equation. My teacher noticed I was struggling, and she partnered me with a student who was absolutely stellar at math. The student explained that I should think of an equation as a scale and balance them out so that they could equal one another. This analogy helped a lot, and after a few tries, I was able to solve an equation on my own. I was amazed and suddenly saw equations as fun puzzles instead of difficult work. She would only line up the numbers that were greater than zero and then draw a line between the numbers greater than zero and the zeros. We would multiply the numbers then just add up the zeros and add them into our final answer. For example: 10 x 1000

Our teacher invited another teacher from one of the upper grades to help teach the lesson because a lot of us struggled to understand the process of long division, and this teacher explained everything so well and clearly. She ended up becoming my math teacher in middle school. I really liked being in her class. She was firm, but very encouraging and straight to the point. I was struggling with my Math classes already, but needed to take an additional one in order to transfer to CSULA. I knew it would be a challenge for me for me but I proceeded and took the class. The professor who I took the class with was often referred to as "old school". He used an overhead projector to teach the class, never the whiteboard. He was AMAZING! He taught each concept at a slow pace, took his time to answer each question any student had, and never moved on to new material until everyone understood. Needless to say, it is what I needed as a student to pass the course. I did and I transferred t o CSULA. We were learning about estimating which was kind of interesting to me. However, my teacher had this jar of candy, it was a tall jar of jolly ranchers to be exact. She instructed to estimate and guess how many there were inside the jar. If you estimated right around the number 100 than you would take the whole jar full of candy home. She wanted an exact number or at least the person who was close the exact number. This taught us about estimating and rounding. One time, I actually got the answer correct so I got to take all 127 jolly ranchers home with me. I was so happy like I aced a test because she said no one has ever got the exact the amount right only the closest. Even though math is a subject that I always struggled in. This teacher made geometry fun. One of the things that I remember about his class is that he used many many examples that were very similar to the text book as well as the ones on hos quizzes. Another thing he did was before he would continue onto the next concept was to make sure we understood the one before.
