A typical thriller will include that of a battle between the protagonist and the antagonist, there will be a disruption and equilibrium. The storyline will include a chain of bad events that will build the tension and suspense in order to have a successful climax. The aim of the protagonist is to restore justice whilst the antagonist tries to destroy it. I have created a prezi presentation to briefly explain what is expected in every sub-genre.

Horror thrillers focus on suspense and tension, the adrenaline rush with the emphasis on fear and the gore. A supernatural or psychopathic origin may be present in some cases to build more on the “horror” aspects. We had gone for the ‘slasher’ side of horrors, this style features a lot of gruesome murders with teenagers often being the main prey.

All mystery and thriller films deal with suspense, it’s the different in pace and action components as well as the audience’s knowledge of knowing or not knowing the antagonist before the protagonist does. There needs to be an incident or turning point that makes the main character’s life change from their usual everyday setting to where they go on a journey to solve an issue or a series of complications.

This sub-genre’s plot usually centres on the serial killer/robber/murderer. As opposed to traditional crime films, the storyline focuses both on the antagonist and the protagonist. This sub-genre uses both action and psychological aspects to build on tension and suspense.

We used the majority of the expectations from both of these sub-genres so that we could create and produce a successful crime/mystery thriller opening sequence. From the crime sub-genre, we kept the elements of a serial killer/murderer being involved as well as focusing on the antagonist and protagonist. We decided to take out the psychological aspect as we didn’t think that it would match the storyline. We have also incorporated from mystery the features of hiding the identity of the antagonist all the way through. Instead of letting the audience know who the murderer is we came to the conclusion that keeping them a total secret would be better to keep the audience on their toes.

The director will include a large amount of jump cuts as there will be things happening that the audience is unaware of, yet essential to the film’s storyline and will later make sense. Cross cutting is a key point in editing as it is used to build on suspense, important for a thriller. We used both of these elements to editing as we wanted our thriller to be as accurate as possible to professional production crews.
Our thriller varied in pace of the shots, it was slow and calm at some points and were also fast at other points. The intention of the slow areas were to calm the audience and to make them think that nothing bad was going to happen. However the fat paced areas were to make the audience’s hearts race faster, a somewhat adrenaline rush.

Music is essential for any film of any genre, it helps the audience to understand the mood of the characters and hint at any significant part in a film.

For a thriller in-particular, it adds suspense and tension. It will often start off slow and smooth, then build up to make certain shots more dramatic.

Within our thriller we used diegetic sound, examples of where we used this are when the murderer was scrapping the knives together, creating a screech. The non-diegetic sound was the soundtrack, the music itself had a crescendo when it came to the chorus, and the effect of this was to make the audiences hearts race faster, foreshadowing a significant event in the narrative.

Diegetic and Non-diegetic sound is also an important feature for a thriller film; used in cut-aways to show something completely unrelated to the storyline. This is used to then build back up the suspense by showing the audience something shocking and then to calm them down again with the use of a cut-away.

In my thriller we used music and non/diegetic sound, the music was that of “In Flames” by Natalie Lungley as it fitted the conventions of a thriller with it being slow paced at the beginning and later on getting faster. We made sure to include shots that were suitable to the music’s pace as well as editing to the beat of the song; it would make the thriller more effective.

The location of a thriller is very important; it helps the audience to establish the theme of the film. If it setting were that of a basement with nothing but a chair, it influences the audience to think that it is a crime/mystery/horror thriller. In the case of my thriller opening, my group used a garage and a chair, the victim would be the only one who sat in the chair.

The setting of a film is also what often creates an intense atmosphere in thrillers. Quite often the setting is an isolated location, such as an haunted house in the night. This emphasises that a character is alone, so if hey hear a noise then the audience will immediately suspect danger. Most of the setting also emphasises danger as it’s known that night is generally more dangerous than day. The Orphanage is set in a big house in the countryside, isolated from civilisation which can create a sense of urbanoia for the audience. A lot of thrillers do this as it plays on the audiences most common fears, conveying that there is no help.

There is often low-key lighting as it can help to conceal who the murderer/psychopathic killer is, hiding features of the face. We used this as well as dressing the murderer in all black clothing to make sure that the audience wouldn’t be able to tell who the antagonist is.

Black clothing is also used in The Bourne Ultimatum for the antagonists, portraying danger and to have their identity hidden, we used this clothing as a silhouette to create the same effect of that in Psycho.

With costumes, the antagonist would be dressed in dark clothes to hide identity of that person which we stuck to in our thriller. The protagonist, victim in our case will most likely be wearing every-day clothing, our victim was dressed in party clothing as in the narrative it states that she is on her way to a party.

Make-up is essential for a thriller; suggesting social groups and personality of that character. The murderer in our thriller had their characteristics concealed as they wore all black clothing and their face was covered, there being no make-up needed for this character, however for the victim we made sure that because she was on her way to apart that she was signifying this.

Close ups are quite common for thrillers in general, especially in mystery thriller sub-genres; aiming to show people’s reactions when they have seen or experienced something shocking, emphasising their fear. It is mostly used in thrillers to denote fear and shock on one’s face rather than happy emotions; this is to keep the atmosphere of the film. Mystery thrillers are usually a tense and suspenseful atmosphere, the directors and producers aim to not lose that element.

Extreme close ups are used a lot as well, usually to focus on a specific item (quite often a weapon or storyline significant item) which illustrates the danger of the antagonist. They can also be used to focus on a part of a person, for example their eyes. This reveals emotions of a character that can’t be seen when looking at them from further away.

It is typical for a thriller to have a large amount of close-ups and extreme close ups of the protagonist character, this is often to show their emotions and is to focus on props that aid the narrative.

It is typical for a thriller to have a large amount of close-ups and extreme close ups of the protagonist character, this is often to show their emotions and is to focus on props that aid the narrative.

The shots of the antagonist character will more often than not be cut quickly, aiming to hide their identity. This is done by using a shot of the back of them, with low-key lighting, a silhouette or shadow of this character.

We stuck somewhat to the protagonist having the main focus, yet we changed the camera angle, shooting footage from different places with only them being in the shot. The main close-ups of this character where when she was walking, no distinct emotion as she believed she was on her own, and the same emotion as to later when she is laying on the floor unconscious.

The shots of the antagonist, murderer were that of when she was facing away from the victim to then turn around and reach out to grab her. Thus sticking to the conventions of cinematography with the murderer.
