I don't really have much of a similar experience as Jeannette but i have gotten burned on the hand before and my father told me i should be more careful when handling hot things.I family is different from them because we have our house in one place and we have food and never go hungry and have money to go out and spend it on things we like unlike them whole move around a lot and don't have much to spend.something I learned is that from Jeannette family is that they hold morals that are different from my families like running from the hospital,stealing and not really respecting the laws and people in power .

A social issue that i saw throughout the book was how their social class effected them.This was because in the book Rex Jeannette's dad sees the people with more power over the regular citizens as people who think they are better than others.For example on page 34 we can see how their hotel room caught on fire so they had to out and go somewhere else because they could not afford the room anymore. So they had to move out and look somewhere else and decide to spend their night's at the beach, where a policeman approaches the family and says they need to move because it was illegal. Page 34 says "He was nice and kept calling us folks and even drew us a map to a place where we could sleep without getting arrested.But after he left,Dad called him the goddamn gestapo and said people like that got their jollies pushing people like us around." showing us how the father felt about people with higher social class and how he felt as someone with a lower social class.

What was happening before was that she had gone to the hospital because she had burned herself when she caught fire while cooking and now she is back and doing it again while her parents tell her its better for her so she wont fear it next time it happens.

A quote that stood out to me was on page 15 where it says " A few days after mom and dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs.I was hungry,Mom was at work on a painting, and none else was there to fix them for me". I was surprised by this because she had just come out of the hospital from burning on fire because she was cooking hot dogs and her parents let her do it again knowing what had happened before.

1) How do rhetorical strategies (like ethos, pathos, logos) enhance the story? 

The story is enhanced by rhetorical strategies because, the author uses pathos to make us feel terrified when Jeannette's dad tried to run his wife over while she was pregnant. The quote says "It was the middle of the night,and mom bolted out of the car and ran into darkness." "We shot towards mom who screamed and jumped out of the way". This makes the audience feel terrified for the mother who is getting chased down by the husband.

2)What tone and mood are created at various parts of the work? 

The tone and mood are created in the chapters 1-50 was intense because the way the book is set up with the setting and the events going on throughout these chapters are really pictured through the reading.We can see how the family struggles with a lot of things like child manipulation,broken family and not being able to stay still and moving to Arizona to the middle of the desert and then back to Blythe etc...The family seems to get in a lot of trouble with the government payments because they tend to be moving from place to place and so in order to not be caught they must move causing the tension in the family to be a bit scary but adventures for the kids.

3) How effective is the author’s use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling?

The effect that the dialogue had on the story was very effective because in the book we can see how the characters react to the information when there is a new event going on and we can see their thoughts on the situation. For example on page 14 we read that Jeannette was in the hospital and was making a recovery when her father walks in and runs out of the hospital with people yelling at him and trying to stop him. This enhances the reading knowing that the doctors are yelling at hi m while chasing him making this an active and intensive scene.

On page 108 one thing that bothers me is that when Jeannette's dad goes through the cages of the wild animals with the kids knowing it can dangerous while trying to prove that HE is right to everyone that wild animals are not wild.This makes me see how I don't agree with the way Rex puts his children in trouble and in danger without even caring enough that they might get hurt.A quote in the book says "Dad calmly put his hand between the iron bars of the cage and rested it on the cheats neck." Here we see how Jeannette saw the way her dad wanted her to see the cheats as harmless and kind when in reality it was her dad doing it making her think that he was a brave smart guy.

2)How might readers in different time periods or of different ages interpret the text?

They younger kids will probably agree with Rex that wild animals are not aggressive because they are told happy things about animals in the wild and how beautiful they are.And example is in the book it says "We climbed under the chained fence and knelt around dad" another is "Dad took my hand and slowly guided it to the side of the cheetahs neck." This shows how she saw the animal because of the way her dad responded to it going near them. Meanwhile those who are older know that these animals can be very dangerous and could attack at any moment even when not hungry.A quote that supports this is on page 108 it says "One man was calling to us to get back behind the chain fence." Here we can see that the way older people see this as a horrifying situation and would not end well.

3)Which of your personal experiences or memories is affecting your perceptions of the story?

Something that makes me think this way is that because when I was younger I remember on the news seeing that the famous killer whale from sea world that had killed this trainer while in a show out of nowhere began to drag her around and drown her. So my perspective on Rex jumping the gate is wild to me knowing that these are wild animals and that they are hunters.

What was going on was that the kids were going hungry because their mother didn't make food for them or that sometimes their dad would use their money on drinks and gambling.So then they would all need to fend for themselves and find food in trash or go with others to eat.

The way that capitalism effects our characters in a more challenging way .This is because capitalism means that everyone is on their own from their ways of finding food to find and getting a house.This causes our character and her family to struggle finding some place to stay because they constantly move because they can pay rent or are just not able to afforded food. On page 150 it explains how their house looked "The house was a dinky thing perched high up off the road on a hillside so steep that only the back of the hose rested on the ground." "One corner of the kitchen ceiling leaked like a sieve." This shows us how their life style was because the government didn't support them with housing or food or a job. So because of this our character Jeannette must go through this tough life by herself and her siblings also much go through it and find ways to make sure that they can survive. This also causes them to have have to move a lot because we already know that her dad cant keep a job and her mother doesn't want to work so that doesn't help them anymore to save their money for their needs but instead their parents use the money for useless things.

In the story we can see her mother is an example.In the book on page 172 that when they were out of food that their mother suggested that they eat a ham in which they told her it was "full of maggots" where their mother told them "Don't be so picky". Here we can see how their mother is not really in a good Psychological state because she is telling them that the food is good to eat when there are obviously bugs in it that could harm them and make them sick , and someone who is a mother would probably not suggest to eat that and instead would rather find something better for them to eat instead of just telling them off that they will be fine. Another example is that the kids were mentally not okay because they tried to eat wild plants because they were really exhausted and hungry.Also they were not psychologically okay because Jeannette started to take food out of the trash to eat because she was really hungry in witch these kids thought is was okay to be neglected from their parents and not feed. For one last example is that their mother was not mentally well because she even stated hiding food from them her own children leaving them to starve while she ate. On page 174 it says "Brian yanked the covers back.Lying on the mattress next to mom was one of those huge family sized Hershey chocolate bars, the shinny silver wrapper pulled back and torn away." "I can't help it, she sobbed i'm a sugar addict just like your father is an alcoholic." This shows us how because of the families living life was like it caused them to be mentally in survival mode for them self.
