Hey everyone! It was a pleasure meeting all of you.
My name is María Camila Paiba from Universidad de La Sabana. Regarding the second Icebreaker, my favorite Colombian dish for a special day is Bandeja Paisa. I love how it has a lot of different flavors, and it just leaves you full. It’s delicious. Also, I love it when it has a lot of plantains. It's just a thousand times better. The special daypart? I mean, any day can be a special day, so the answer is Bandeja Paisa. I can eat it on a regular day or on a special day, it doesn't matter.
While doing the icebreaker, it was interesting to me how everyone chose different dishes. Some chose Arepas and, others chose a typical American breakfast such as beacon with eggs. I don't really have much to say; it just captured my attention.

Names: Diana, Ariela, Areli Lopez, Hennessy,Allison,Ben Tate,Oscar,

A key factor about the ICC & the Rome statute is that establishes the court's functions, jurisdiction and structure. The Rome Statute established four core international crimes which are genocides, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression and According to the ICC those crimes will not be subject to any statute of limitations. The court only has jurisdiction with respect to crimes committed after July 1, 2002 which it was when the treaty entered into force in countries that have ratified its treaty. However, the ICC has the power to prosecute if the Security Council refers a case to it regarding crimes committed in a country that is not a signatory to the treaty. A fun fact about the ICC is that this court is unique in the sense that it was created by a treaty and not by the United Nations and until this day it remains independent.

Hello again! My name is Abril from the Universidad de La Sabana. Personally, I was really surprised by the Tribunal my group and I studied (Supreme Court of Justice) because it's really similar to the "Corte Constitucional" we have here in Colombia. As a matter of fact, has also nine justices. However, these ones are elected by the Congress and not the President, as happens in the US. However, they were both created for the same purpose (the protection of the Constitution and the promise of equal justice under law for all). Roosevelt would be very proud to see how his idea of a government of law and not men is being implemented in other countries as well as in the United States. Although it's out of my knowledge to say that every country in the world has this type of Court, I strongly believe that there should be one in every single one of them. The only thing I would change is the fact that non-lawyers became justices too. I think the times on which we are living, specially due to COVID-19, has shown us that diverse disciplines are required to solve problems and guarantee justice.

Men/Women: Currently, the judges are mostly men but there are few women and women have been judges and presidents in the past. The current composition only holds one woman, Elizabeth Odio Benito, the president. The rest of the six judges are all men.

Diversity: The Inter American Court of Human Rights has jurisdiction over 25 of the 35 States of the OAS that have acceded to its authority. So basically, all Latin American countries except Cuba are Members of the Court. We consider it to be diverse.

Hello, my name is Valeria Estefanía Torres Dos Santos from the Universidad de La Sabana.

From my point of view, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) plays an important role in the international system, since it is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, therefore it has a wide scope and is not limited by different aspects, like the geographic one for example.

Likewise, the judges that make up the court are usually highly qualified and recognized internationally and in their respective countries for their contributions to law. Its international panel, in general, is a differentiator of this court.

However, I consider that a disadvantage that the Court has is that it is very limited when exercising its functions, since on different occasions, the opinion of the court may be rejected by the States involved. Consequently, we find articles like Marcel Berlin's for The Guardian that classify the ICJ as "the UN's Least effective body".

My group and I studied the International Criminal Court (ICC). It is relevant and there should be more tribunals in the world. I say this because it tries people accused of very serious crimes of concern to the global local area. Crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The Court takes part in a worldwide battle to end immunity, and through global criminal justice it intends to hold those responsible for their violations and crimes and to assist with keeping these violations and crimes from happening once more. The Court can't achieve these objectives alone. It is a court often turned to when after all other options have run out, it looks to supplement, not supplant, public Courts. Administered by a worldwide treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world's first long-lasting global criminal court. What I would change about this tribunal is the fact that it works as a "last resort", I feel as if though it should be more involved in order for crimes to be prevented from happening.

Extraordinarily, being all this without the influence and pressure of the United States. This fact also surprised me a lot because the HQ of the Inter-American commission of human rights is in Washington D.C.

This is definitely a good tribunal that can be an example for other countries to generate regional and more effective mechanisms to protect human rights with a regional thinking and understanding of the issues.

My group and I have been working on the International Criminal Court & the Rome Statute, this has been a such a great project since before this I didn’t even know there was such a court. It was fascinating to learned how the ICC became something very powerful worldwide. As well as how their power is distributed and who gets to form part of such a court.

Another part that I found interesting about the ICC is the way in which they managed their jurisdiction since there are 123 countries involve as well as to what cases are eligible to go under the ICC. It was incredible to learned as to how a matter gets to the ICC and where and how the rule of law is applied to each case. It was particularly interesting to learn their trial process. However, it is crazy that being a worldwide criminal court, as of today the ICC has formed part of only 30 cases. In my opinion there has to be a bit more improvement regarding ICC since I do believe it lacks the proper resources to enforce the laws that were prescribed by the Rome Statute. However, as soon as they able to improve their weaknesses, the world will have a great chance to become a safer place and those criminals who are running free now, will have no other choice but to come forward and pay for their crimes.

Hello again. My name is María Camila Paiba from Universidad de La Sabana. My group and I studied The Inter American Court of Human Rights alongside The Inter American Commission and Convention of Human Rights.

Reflecting on it, I believe the whole Inter-American Human Rights System it’s not only useful on a regional level but, it has a great responsibility as well in protecting and creating an adequate environment in which human rights violations are no longer possible. For me, it was important studying a regional system because it seems kind of familiar, and it feels even more important since I didn’t know any of this; it was great learning something new. The Inter-American Human Court of Human Rights plays a key role in the supervision of human rights. It is the only judicial body of the OAS. Its importance takes place on the fact that it “guarantees” and “protects” human rights and holds the power to intervene if there is such a violation. I think this is very important because every region needs a supranational entity that pretends to prevent atrocities and that ensures the protection of human rights. That's why there should be more tribunals/ systems like this in the whole world. Although the Inter-American System isn’t perfect (nothing is), the fact that it exists is crucial. I think I would change or add monitoring and control mechanisms. The great challenge this system faces it’s the effective application of justice. Even though there is a commission and a court that supervises the protection of human rights, there isn’t an entity that also supervises the decisions and recommendations that are taken, making it difficult to fully guarantee these rights.

Personally, I believe the court plays an important role in the European Union. The court looks forward to ensuring the respect of the rights and guarantees set in the European Convention on Human Rights. The convention is quite important for the application of the Human Rights and liberties of each citizen in the EU. For me, this is one of the most important roles of the court. The fact that it looks forward to maintaining and defending the ideals, and taking action for the insurance and protection of HR, makes the court important in the International Community and in the European system.

Moreover, I strongly believe that the existence of tribunals around the world is important for having peace and maintaining stability. The existence of institutions that guarantee Human Rights and individual liberty is necessary for the accomplishment of one of the principles each State is constituted.

In my opinion, this is one of the most important tribunals. I loved working on this project to see how our court system differs from the United States in terms of Human Rights.
I liked that each judge was elected by a list of 3 judges that were put forth by each member state. I believe this creates diversity among every state's political views and gives every member state a voice.
If I could change one thing about this tribunal is that they have no authority over national bodies, they can only ask the bodies to comply.

Hello, I’m Laura Cobos and i’m from Universidad de La Sabana. First I would like to say that do this investigation about the supreme court of the US helps me to open a little bit more my eyes and take into account the relevance that this court has in the country. Also, for me it’s very important to know that in many parts of the world like in Colombia or in the US it exist an institution that has a high level of relevance in the protection of people’s rights under the law. So, we can see that in many parts of the world a tribunal with this level of relevance is already working. Nevertheless, we conclude that the court has many similitudes with the “Corte constitucional” of Colombia, in which curiously there is also nine judges.

Even so, this court, as all the courts around the world has problems that we should resolve. One thing that I would change is the fact that the president has all the authority to nominated the amount of judges possible if he has the opportunity. I mean there is not a limit of judges that a single president can nominated for the Supreme Court. For example while Donald Trump was in charge he has the power to appoint three judges. That’s a big number knowing that the court is just for nine. I think that this is a big problem because as we know this charge is for life, so if a single president put one third of the judges the ideology of the majority of the political power would have a benefit, regarding the other party.

Tribunal- EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The role of the court I studied nsure that States respect the rights and guarantees set out in the Convention. It does this by examining complaints (known as “applications”) lodged by individuals or, sometimes, by States. They look at the most important one and others that will apply to many others.

This is very relevant because this helps solves major issues being brought up in the country. I would not change anything.

Thinking about the international African Court on Human and People's Rights got me thinking about how much progress the world has made in the rights of minorities. I believe that there should be more courts around the world because it will keep governments in check of what is fair and equal treatment and what is just outright abuse of power.

Hello, my name is Allison Gil and I am from Universidad de La Sabana.

In my opinion, the International Criminal Court has a crucial role in the world due to the fact that it investigates crimes against humanity, such as genocide, and aggression. Saying this, it can be said that the court mentioned before its crucial for preserving humankind. Also, I found it very interesting that it is very diverse, not only in terms of gender but also in terms of ethnicity as it includes both women and men from different parts of the world, including America, Africa, Europe, and Asia with a total of 9 men and 9 women. This makes it possible to have different perspectives about the disputes that can be ongoing from a cultural perspective and undoubtedly reflects diversity. Also, the majority of the investigations have been made in Africa, despite of the presence of the court in the other continents, as it has witness a vast amount of crimes of all types, for example the Rwandan Genocide and many civil wars. Despite of this, I think it is crucial that the court has a more notable presence in the others countries that are part of the Rome Statue, such as Colombia. Likewise, United States and China that are two superpowers are not part of the ICC and have questioned its legitimacy, which makes its operation more challenging.

I believe that the Inter-American Court, Commission, and Convention of Human Rights is a very important court because it creates a different space or a different scenario to those who could not solve their issues in their national institutions. Of course, this court should take action when all the national mechanisms to solve the issue where used, therefore something that I would change is the effectivity in the evaluation of each case. There are some cases that have not taken every national measure but are still evaluated by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, so this brings up an issue regarding the respect and measures of the national institutions in each nation.

Hi I am Alejandro Vanegas from Universidad de la Sabana. I really enjoy working with people in USA. I learn a lot about their culture and point of view in many issues, from food to security. It was a different and interesting experience. The time in sincronice work was short and the times could been better but it's an exercise I liked and which I am thankful for having.

Hellooo, I’m Laura Cobos, and I’m from Universidad de La Sabana.
First I want to say that this was an interesting experience for me, it was a little bit challenging, but after all I think that we did a great job coordinating the presentations. Also, I think that have this opportunity allow us to be open-minded and listen to others people's perspective. For me it was fascinating to understand a little bit more of the Supreme Court and learn about how it is composed and their principal features. To conclude, I want to thank this experience because it helps me to practice a little bit more my English and I could share a piece of the Colombian culture to all of you. Thanks for your time!!

I have learned that the African Court of Human and People's Rights exist, and all the specifications of it. I honestly believe that this process went a lot smoother than I thought it did, and I find it interesting how similar how college Colombian students lives are compared to us, American students. As a final comment, I want to thank all the Colombian students for working with us and I wish you luck in your schooling
