This theme first emerges in the beginning of the novel, when Scout explains that "The sheriff hadn't had the heart to put [Boo Radley]...in jail alongside the Negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement”(Lee 12). This quote is an example of the prejudice struggles that African Americans experienced, as although both them and Boo had committed a crime, only the African Americans had ended up in jail. This example draws the conclusion that the citizens of Maycomb strongly disliked the African Americans.

DEVELOPED:

An example of prejudice that was developed later on in the book, would be the treatment of Boo Radley. For example, Scout asks Miss Maudie, "'Do you think they're true, all those things they say about B-Mr. Arthur?'...Miss Maudie shook her head 'No, child,” she said, “that is a sad house. I remember Arthur Radley when he was a boy. He always spoke nicely to me, no matter what folks said he did'"(Lee 51). This conversation shows the narrow mindedness of the Maycomb citizens, and how they choose to believe gossip rather then reaching their own conclusions based on the truth.

The theme of prejudice is refined towards the end of the novel, when Tom Robinson is proven guilty after falsely accused of a crime. Atticus explains to Jem that:"'In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life'"(Lee 251-252). This quote infers that the jury were prejudice against Tom, although there was evidence that proved him innocent.
