In chapter 14 titled "Eyeball to Eyeball" by Ratliff he identifies the musical element of closeness as " two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination. I had trouble understanding his definition of closeness at first, but the examples he uses to describe closeness help clarify. I agree with Ratliff that "closeness is developed over time" and that closeness is priceless. Ratliff uses The Beatles as an example of closeness, because the band members had chemistry. Through songs, such as, "She Loves You, The Beatles used their harmonized "oohs" to capture audiences. The voices of each band member compliment each other. Ratliff addresses the closeness in more traditional music, but when reading the chapter I couldn't help but think of OutKast. In songs like "Roses" and "Ms. Jackson, Andre 3000 and Big Boi exchange flows effortlessly and seamlessly.
In this Padlet I will explore Ratliff's example of closeness as well as my own example.

Ratliff identifies artists from different genres but does not include OutKast, who is (arguably) the best Hip Hop duo. Big Boi and Andre 3000 have differing flows. However, the two different flows and styles come together to form the genre defying OutKast. In the opening chorus of "Ms. Jackson", Andre sings the opening chorus, "I'm sorry, Ms. Jackson, I am for real", then Big Boi begins to rap at just the right time. After Big Boi's verse Andre raps with his unique creative flow. The artist's flow compliments each other as they they continue to exchange flows

Although the two have different flows and lyricism, Big Boi and Andre 3000 created waves in the Hip- Hop Genre. While there was other hip-hop groups/ duos, the connection between Andre and Big Boi was refreshing and new. They changed the game. They went "beyond normal limits" (Ratfliff)

The Beatles had a variety of personalities, but the music they created unified them to influence music of the time and even now. In the song, "She Loves You", The Beatles harnessed their talents together to sing the lyrics "She loves you ya ya". In the same song they sing "ooo". I'll get back to the "ooo" at the end of the Padlet.

In the song, if you can hear passed the screaming, The Beatles sing together to woo the crowd. Although the crowd was screaming through out the whole song, the crowd screams even more loud when The Beatles harmonize together to sing "ooo". The power Ratliff claims The Beatles had can be summed up in that single line.
