Each group write your take-away, questions, wondering from the trauma sensitive article. In the end, we should have a 6th, 7th, 8th, Encore & Office staff post

We feel it is sometimes how you approach the situation that will determine how it turns out. We often forget to include solutions WITH the student.

Sandy's story reminds me of the reading from "Lost in School", no wonder, Dr. Ross Greene wrote this book. Sometimes our "restraints/rules/protocol meant to protect all" causes more disruption for the student we are trying to help who are in trauma. Many of our students data (6th grade) shows they are having similar struggles. This quote, " These experiences in early childhood rewired her brain and how she would interact with the world." This is what I think is going on with quite a few of our kids. Trying to help them all is what is overwhelming at times, especially when they are all going off at the same time. It is great to know we are part of a staff that is truly "all in this together" and we all pitch in and lend a helping hand time and time again!

"On a side note from my experience, last year when working on an activity identifying triggers, every student said that yelling was their top trigger. Consider this when using the stern teacher voice. Reel it in a little and be sure you are not the trigger yourself in how you are communicating. I saw this happen with Sandy when a staff yelled at another student in the hallway to stop running. Sandy just heard the volume and started crying. She was in another room under her table at the time." What are our collective commitments to our kids and our behavior.

What problem solving approaches could we try or attempt to do differently? "To what extent do our activities and setting provide opportunity for skill building and the opportunity to practice those skills? How often to we give children a chance to practice those things we tell them they need to be doing…and hopefully have been teaching them?"

It was interesting to read about the triggers and how some students need to have "things" with them to help them feel safe. How do we keep each child's triggers straight? With so many kids having trauma, it becomes difficult to remember that "this" student needs this, and "that" student needs something else. It's also difficult to figure out when is a "fidget" a fidget, and when is it a "toy?"

One thing that stood out to me was the part about transitioning away from an unsafe situation. Even if the student feels threatened, they have already assessed the threat and might be hesitant to leave, "The next transition brings on more unknown."
