It was built to keep the citizens of East Berlin from leaving into West Berlin. After 30 years of Berlin being divided it was finally tore down on November, 9 1989. Guards were armed with snipers and machine guns.
The fences were electric so when you touched them, you got shocked.
People got over the walls with crazy ideas like hot air balloons and being guards that escaped.
