This image signifies the thousands of Vietnamese that were desperate to flee by ship just like Ha's family.

This image indicates that many soldiers were captured during the Vietnamese War. This includes Ha's father. Father was on a navy mission when he was captured and never returned back home. 

This image represents a tradition that is practiced during the holiday Tet. Ha and her family wear new clothes when they celebrate Tet in order to promote a fresh beginning to the new year.

This image shows the presidential palace submerged in smoke, which is the site the South Vietnamese were faced during this time.

This image shows how Ha can see the bombs going off, but isnt affected by the bombing physically (her house is not being bombed).

This image shows that the Vietnamese would jump off the ship to attempt suicide. They attempted suicide because they know that they lost everything with the loss of South Vietnam. 

This image shows many South Vietnamese people waiting for someone to come and sponsor their family so that they can be able to leave.

This image represents how packed the ship was, and how people had to sit a certain way in order for everyone to be as comfortable as they could be.

Ha's sponsor resembled this man in the picture.  

This image represents how Ha was being bullied in school. It was her first day and people were making fun of her appearance. 

Ha's family and sponsors are being harassed by their neighbors. They resort to vandalism and vandalize the sponsor's house.

Ha and her teacher had a conversation about her eating in the bathroom. Ha eats in the bathroom due to not having friends and being surrounded by her bullies. The teacher persuades her to try making friends. In order to help Ha, her teacher, Miss Scott, packs Ha a lunch bag and invites two nice children to befriend Ha.     

This image shows the amethyst ring that Ha's mother received from Father.  Mother asked for a sign showing that Father is gone. The sign was the ring's disappearance. This showed Mother that Father is really gone. 

This quote shows how all three of Ha's brothers had pick their careers. They are successful and succeeding. The three brothers went for a major based on their strengths. for instance, Brother Khoi loved pets, such as his chick, so he got a career in being a doctor for animals.

Ha learns how to control her temper. She now knows that violence is not the answer, which is what her mother has been teaching her since the beginning of the novel.
