Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) represents a new chapter in mathematics, the benefits of digital transformation as well as the challenges of University 4.0. IR 4.0 involve many elements of problem solving and systemic thinking that can be assisted by computers, implementation of coding, ICT competence skills such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving ability to solve everyday problems especially in complex mathematical tasks. Developing problem solving skills and higher order thinking skills represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work and the ability to collaborate one another. Discussion-based approaches are the development platform of critical thinking skills, problem solving ability to be more creative, fluid, and perceptive to identify the implicit premises. Early thinking around IR 5.0 era provide technology challenges based on the recycle complete automation of problem solving in analytical capabilities, big data, blockchain, IoT and smartcity. As a conclusion, effective problem-solving requires a combination of creative thinking, sound analytical skills, enable traceability and searchability for open innovation in problem-solving processes.

Abstract Webinar 1: Modeling Bilingual Lexicon Induction Precision With Beta Distribution

Abstract

Creating bilingual dictionary is the first crucial step in enriching low-resource languages. Especially for the closely related ones, it has been shown that the constraint-based approach is useful for inducing bilingual lexicons from two bilingual dictionaries via the pivot language. However, if there are no available machine-readable dictionaries as input, we need to consider manual creation by bilingual native speakers. To reach 29 a goal of comprehensively create multiple bilingual dictionaries, even if we already have several existing machine-readable bilingual dictionaries, it is still difficult to determine the execution order of the constraint-based approach to reducing the total cost. Plan optimization is crucial in composing the order of bilingual dictionaries creation with the consideration of the methods and their costs. We formalize the plan optimiza- tion for creating bilingual dictionaries by utilizing Markov Decision Process (MDP) with the goal to get a more accurate estimation of the most feasible optimal plan with the least total cost before fully implementing the constraint-based bilingual lexicon induction. We model a prior beta distribution of bilingual lexicon in- duction precision with language similarity and polysemy of the topology as α and β parameters. It is further used to model cost function and state transition probability. We estimated the cost of all investment plans as a baseline for evaluating the proposed MDP-based approach with total cost as an evaluation metric. After utilizing the posterior beta distribution in the first batch of experiments to construct the prior beta distribution in the second batch of experiments, the result shows 61.5% of cost reduction compared to the estimated all investment plans and 39.4% of cost reduction compared to the estimated MDP optimal plan. The MDP-based proposal outperformed the baseline on the total cost.

Tasks designed are used to create the awareness, recognizing the thinking processes and experience how the processes proceed in different phases when tackling a problem. The phases of work together with the rubrics will be introduced as a framework for thinking mathematically during problem-solving. Opportunities will be given for participants to use and develop the problem-solving skills they had encountered in the tasks. Prompts and questions are gradually introduced to help working systematically and productively on one’s own or in a group setting. The assumption is not only one used the mathematical knowledge already acquired in the problem solving but that knowledge can be developed too and strengthen through problem solving.

This scenario has led to a decreased number of female mathematicians, thus reduce the number of women in mathematics for doctoral degree. This, inadvertently contribute to a decline of female professors in mathematics. This phenomenon has also increased the gap between male and female professors in mathematics in developing countries. Thus, this talk aims to shed lights into trials and tribulations of woman mathematics professor.

Abstract

This talk is highlighting on the guideline or sharing experience on how to do successful research in mathematics. A recipe for succeeding in mathematical research would have been a laughable oxymoron, as this is a quintessentially creative endeavor. The insight of this talk is on mathematical modelling research. The talk will start on the ‘Essence of Research ‘, divided into a few phases. Be knowledge-seeking is the first criteria a research student should have. The crucial part of doing research is transforming any related problem into mathematical language, either in equations or mathematical statements, which is known as a mathematical model. To doing this, some assumptions or limitations should also be listed. Identifying the whole problem and splitting it into parts, most probably into three parts, is necessary depending on the research area the researcher is digging in. Identify the scopes, boundary or domain of the research so that the objectives are achievable during the time frame. Identifying the methodology used in the research will never be any less critical during research. Furthermore, mathematical research is an intrinsically social activity. In the research process, regular meetings with supervisors, seeking help, advice, and feedback from other experts when necessary, is essential, rather than being stuck for a long time. Finally, the main point of mathematical research is for the students to enjoy it!. More tips will be given throughout the talk until the process of writing the thesis.

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are frequently overlooked and have previously been an uncovered subject. Many myths exist about women who work in STEM fields, particularly in mathematics. It is a common misconception in people that mostly men specialize in mathematics. To disprove these myths, I've offered some remarkable evidence. The significance of mathematical societies and organizations in providing financing, scholarships, and opportunities, particularly for women is also emphasized. Successful and flourishing female mathematicians' stories are briefly presented as well. The talk also includes personal accomplishments as a female mathematician. There is also a discussion of the various employment options available to women working in mathematics. The talk's major goal is to alter people's perceptions of mathematics and job choices, especially women.

Abstract:

Mathematics is a subject which acts as a gateway to science. According to the famous Philosopher Kant, “A Science is exact only in so far as it employs Mathematics”. In other words, Mathematics has provided the foundations for many of the greatest discoveries and innovations of the last century. Its origins date back to ancient times when algebra and geometry were used for commercial purposes, measuring crops and fields, as well as valuing money. Nowadays, Mathematics provide both the theoretical frameworks and applied tools to address problems in commerce, technology and science as “Mathematics is a Science of all Sciences and art of all arts.” Every area of Mathematics has its own unique applications to the different career options. For example, Algebra is very important for computer science, cryptology, networking, study of symmetry in Chemistry and Physics. Calculus (including differential equations) is used in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, the motion of water (hydrodynamics), rocket science, molecular structure, option price modelling in Business and Economics models, etc. Women are encouraged to give the necessary time and thought process to build a future they dream of. The career world is competitive. The competition and the opportunities in the career world become a serious problem for women if they do not do well in Mathematics, because then they are excluding themselves from the many career paths that require Mathematics. Women have to study hard, achieve a level of excellence, and take such a fundamental discipline like Mathematics seriously if they think they may go into any of the Physical, Social, Health Sciences, Business, Medicine, or related areas. Aside from being useful to becoming a High School teacher, a degree in Mathematics is quite useful in diverse job areas. You can find more detailed information in the informative book "101 Careers in Mathematics" , by Andrew Starrett (editor), MAA publication, 1996, this book is a helpful tool to learn more about career choices in the field of Mathematics.

On average, around 30% of the world’s researchers are women. Less than one third of female students choose to study higher education courses in subjects like math and engineering. Women working in STEM fields publish less, often receive less pay and do not progress as far as men in their careers. Global female enrollment is also particularly low in certain fields. Just 3% of students joining information and communication technology (ICT) courses across the globe are women. That improves slightly to 5% for mathematics and statistics courses. This talk aims to identify key areas for improvement to enhance visibility of women in Mathematical Sciences especially in the South/Southeast Asia and the steps that can be taken in this regard.

Title: Benefits of Mathematical Thinking in Career Empowerment

Abstract

Being a mathematics graduate may be a dubious choice for some people despite their love of the subject. One of the misconception is that a major in mathematics is only for the classroom teaching. In reality, a wide range of interesting and lucrative occupations are available as the demand for math specialists has increased tremendously. Whether you want to work in applied math to solve real-world problems or pure mathematics to broaden the boundaries of what is known (and unknown), there are a number of qualities and abilities that set math graduates apart from the others. The most significant and distinguishing characteristics are sophisticated problem solving and critical thinking, both of which will be extremely useful in the working environment. The ability to arrange things or actions in a specific order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules, as well as the ability to use mathematical reasoning to select the appropriate method for solving problems, producing answers, and drawing conclusions, will aid in professional success. In other words, employers would recognize that if you can perform arithmetic, you can do any job that requires exact analysis, inductive and deductive reasoning. The goal of this presentation is to highlight the desired qualities and abilities, as well as to demonstrate how they contribute to professional career empowerment through real-life examples. In order to achieve this, some working experiences from various periods of life and educational levels will be shared. Furthermore, in keeping with the focus of this session, a mathematician values that are naturally associated with female qualities are promoted with enthusiasm, as these would greatly contribute to the competence of women professional roles. It is hoped that the experience shared will give some insightful ideas on how beneficial to have a mathematical thinking skill in career empowerment.

Abstract

As the world hurtles further into the Fourth Industrial Revolution , data is everywhere. Almost every sector collects data to solve problems and gain insight into trends and development. However, raw data alone isn’t enough to work with as unorganized and raw data may clutter the businesses’ digital infrastructure and slow down the system. For this reason, an organisation need a competent data team to glean insights and wring actionable answers out of data for a better data driven decision making. A data team is usually made up of data analyst, data scientist and data engineer. Regardless of any of these roles, a data person requires a strong grounding in mathematics. In this talk, I’m aiming to talk about the different roles in data science field and how math graduates can make a headway in a data science career.

Abstract

The focus is on enhancing our own problem-solving abilities, applying own mathematical thinking powers to solve problems.

Women In Mathematics - How To be Successful? The Way Forward

Abstract

Historically women scientists are leading ground-breaking research across the world. Women are helping to change the world through their discoveries, and are also role models for younger generations of women researchers who want to pursue their scientific careers and to break the glass ceiling. However, to drive and achieve greater scientific excellence and development, more women need to participate in solving the great challenges facing humanity, by getting involved in science especially mathematics as they currently represent less than 33.3% of the researchers globally according to UNESCO. To encourage more women to succeed in mathematics, successful women mathematicians among us need not only to be admired and loved, but equally imitated and followed closely to learn as they are. In addition, early inculcating of mathematical interest to girls has been proven to be of great benefit in given birth to fine women mathematicians. In this talk, based on my own experience, I will share some tips on how women can be successful and succeed in mathematics, and how to get averse on the area.

Future for woman in mathematics

One cannot talk about the future without looking at the past. From ancient times to the present day, women had contributed in the development of mathematics. The first appearance of female mathematicians was in the 4th century, where Pandrosion, a Greek Alexandrine mathematician who was known for an approximate solution to doubling the cube , and Hypatia (c.355–415) was the first woman known to have taught mathematics.
In the 18th century, Italian mathematician Maria Agnesi was the first female that publish a book in mathematics. French mathematician Émilie du Châtelet's published a translation and commentary on Isaac Newton's work Principia Mathematica. Chinese astronomer Wang Zhenyi published at least twelve books and multiple articles on astronomy and mathematics.
In the 19th century, a Ph.D degree in mathematics was awarded for the first time to a female mathematician.
From that time forward woman have proven to be able to compete and outperform men in many fields of mathematics whenever given a chance. Contemporary educational research has suggested several factors that increase women’s success in mathematics, and historical investigations support the validity of these recent observations. Most women in the history of mathematics shared three characteristics: a supportive family background, early exposure to significant mathematics, and available female role models in mathematics.
Therefor, governments and other funding bodies need to give the support of research and concerns about the future must form part of the rationale of the distribution of funding. Mathematical education should also consider changes that are happening in the mathematical requirements of the workplace; course design need to change according to current and possible future areas of application of mathematics. More time need to be given for engaging surveys and expository writing.
Active mathematicians should concentrate on developing their skills in experimental mathematics, mathematical biology and Mathematical physics as an enormous and diverse subject.
