Throughout the entirety of chapter 6, we continue to see how pap is truly not a good fire towards Huck. We see how Pap threatens Huck about going to school, and eventually, he locks up Huck in a secluded cabin, where he is kept all day. He tries to break free, but one awful day his father returns just in time as he is going to latch free. Not only that, but pap wants to sue Judge Thatcher because of how he stole Huck's money. The odds of him winning the case are very high, but not of taking custody of Huck. He also talks with Huck about how a black man can vote in his home state, and how he can not be a slave. More pap chases Huck with a knife.

On the next morning, we see Huck running some errands for pap. He goes to check the line on the shores of the river, and he claims that when the river is low, good things come his way, like planks, he can sell for. He was right, he found a canoe and hid it from pap. Once he left for the day, huckleberry broke himself free, and put all sort of sorts of goods inside the canoe, for example, food and things to cook with. Most importantly he is going to make it seem as if robbers came and killed him. He then goes in search of some birds, but finds a pig, which he cuts open with the saw, inside the cabin floor, so the blood leaks out. He then grabs a sack of rocks and places them with the pig, and throws them down the river, so the carcass would not be seen. Furthermore, he covers up his tracks and the hole. As the moon set, he set on his canoe to Jackson island, but as he went down pap passed beside him, but went unnoticed.

The next morning a ferry boat passes Jackson Island with many friends and acquaintances such as Pap, Judge Thatcher, Becky Thatcher, Tom Sawyer, and Tom's past aunt. The ferry boat is shooting cannonballs to search for Huck's body in the water. He is hungry, and so he says that food with silver on top floats down to reach the body, and he finds one of them with fancy bread in it. He has set up camp on the island and has lived for three days there, peacefully. One day, as Huck explores the island, as he is the owner of that island as he says, he unexpectedly finds Jim. Jim was surprised to see him, at first, he thought he was a ghost. They then get to talking, and Jim explains that he has a runway, because Miss Watson was looking into selling Jim for 800 Dollars, to take him to New Orleans. Then they talk that people with hairy chests and arms are rich, Huck asks if Jim is rich, and Jim explains he is and how he lost it all. He first invested it into cattle and then went to the bank to keep it safe.

Next, they find a cave big enough for Jim to stand in, where they can hide their traps and such, so that if they come up looking for somebody, they can hide inside that cave and protect themselves. Then they take provisions and the canoe into the cave, and they spend the night there. The next day, they found an abandoned house, in which a dead man was lying. It is depicted that he was shot dead, and Jim prevents him from looking at the deceased man.

Huck is thinking about the dead man they encountered, and Jim says that it is awfully bad luck to think about those things, and he states that they already have bad luck, because Huck touched a snake with his bare hands. Huck is sure it doesn't exist, but sure enough, Huck plays a prank on Jim, where he puts a dead snake on his ankle to scare him, the next morning they wake up to wind Jim bitten by another snake, making venom enter his blood stream. Jim's leg starts to get swollen and Huck needs to head into town, disguised as a girl, so the townspeople don't speculate that Huck is alive. Huck practices his girl walk with Jim. He heads into town to the house of a new woman that came into town, and Huck heads to her house.
