Camera & Equipment

When it came to using the camera and the other equipment when I was making my thriller opening I already had experience in using them from making my preliminary task and also from when I studied GCSE Media Studies in secondary school. However, I do believe I have still learnt a lot from the process of filming and editing my thriller. Since I worked on my own when making my thriller I used all the equipment (camera, lens and tripod) independently. When making my thriller I was able to set up more shots compared to when I was doing my preliminary task and was able to do a larger variety of shots such as tracking shots and panning shots. When I filmed my thriller I used a lens for the first time since they weren't available in GCSE Media and I never used one in my preliminary task. This made it easier to change the depth of field in a particular shot which was useful when filming over the shoulder shots during a conversation.

Premier Pro

In terms of using Premier Pro I already had experience since I had already used in in my preliminary task and in my GCSE coursework so I already knew how to do many of the different things that you can do on Premier Pro such as; rearranging shots, adding sound, cropping shots, etc. When I was editing my thriller I learnt how to modify the sound of some of the audio clips that I had recorded. For example, I had to edit Jaden's voice so it sounded like it was on the radio and also so his voice differentiated from his voice later on in the scene since he is also an actor in the thriller, I did this by adding some reverb and changing the pitch and adding some other effects onto it so it fitted with the sound of the radio. When I was editing my thriller I also learnt how to add filters onto the shots I had filmed, I had to do this so the audience could differentiate the flashback shots to the present day shots, I did this by adding a blue tint to the flashback shots so the audience can tell them apart. Once I had edited all of the footage I stated to work on the sound. I added different soundtracks into my thriller and also changed the audio to add tension to different parts of the opening and to create suspense, I think that because I did all of the editing myself I gained a better understanding of Premier Pro since I had the chance to edit all of the different aspects of the film (sound, footage, titles) to how I wanted them to look.

After Effects

After I had edited all of my footage in Premier Pro I had to add titles to my footage so that It looked like a professional thriller opening. When I was editing my thriller on After Effects I added the BBFC logo to the beginning of my thriller and edited it on Photoshop so that it had the title of my thriller on it. Once I added that I began adding the other titles such as; An Alex Snowden Film, A Soul Band Production, Starring Dane Barker etc. Due to the shots which the titles were going to be added over I wasn't able to use any motion tracking on the camera so I had to be creative with how the text appeared on the screen instead. I learnt how to change the opacity of the shot and made it look like the titles were flickering (as it fit with the theme of the thriller) so that they looked more interesting than it they were just normal and had no effects on them.

When I started planning my thriller I already had an idea of what I needed to do and how I needed to do it since I had already planned and filmed my preliminary task and had also studied Media at GCSE so I already knew the basics of how to plan a thriller, how to work a camera and how to edit footage. When I was studying GCSE Media I had to use the same programmes as I am going to use when making my thriller and when I made my preliminary task (Premier Pro CC, After Effects, Photoshop etc.). Because of my previous experience with these programmes and this equipment I believe it will give me an advantage when it comes to constructing my thriller and make the process slightly easier.
