STEAMformation is a three year system for professional learning and leadership designed to build and sustain a culture of STEAM teaching and learning. This comprehensive partnership will engage key stakeholders to create a shared STEAM vision, develop educators and administrators, cultivate inquiry-based, transdisciplinary instruction and prepare our future workforce. The focus of year one is to develop high quality STEAM experiences. Students wrote down one thing they learned along each side of a triangle and connected their learning (triangles) on the floor. Afterwards, students volunteered to explain why they connected a side of their triangle to a side of their peer's triangle. Ms. Nelson guided the discussion by connecting students' thoughts to the learning objectives.

STEAM innovators and teachers used the Tuning Protocol to examine student work. Ms. Roberts, a math teacher and STEAM innovator, brought a student work sample that came from a STEAM lesson she implemented in her class. In a circle of four “critical friends", I guided the group through the process and kept time. Ms. Roberts, the presenter, described the context for the student work uninterrupted by questions or comments from participants. She began with a framing question which she welcomed feedback. The "critical friends" had time to examine the student work and ask her clarifying questions. Then, with Ms. Roberts listening but silent, participants offered warm and cool feedback - both supportive and challenging. After this feedback was offered, Ms. Roberts had the opportunity, again uninterrupted, to reflect on the feedback and address any comments or questions she chose. Time was reserved for debriefing the experience. Awesome display of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking!
