By turning a simple thing such as the way in which the sun lights up a face into a thing that makes Ralph question reality really shows the true talent of William Golding. Ralph is questioning what a face is which is something that every human is familiar with. This shows that this island and the events that have and will happen will make him question everything he has known up to that point. Roger has no reason to throw the stones at Henry. He has no reason to want to hurt him. He is just doing it because he wants to and he can. I don't think that Roger even wanted to hurt Henry, I think he was throwing the stones to feel a sense of power over the littlun. Golding mentions how the boy was protected by the invisible ring of the lawful world. This is because if they were on a playground at school, there would be an adult to condemn his actions. Through his actions, Ralph establishes his authority and shows the group that he is chief and he gives orders. This is important and is the reason why Jack is "raged without knowing why". Jack resents Ralph because he is chief and not him. He clearly has an ego and this is another thing that comes between their friendship. The last sentence also describes the tension between the two. It is a sharp contrast to the first passage I pointed out and that's why I chose them both. The first passage shows how easily they became friendly.
