ADELINE JETOL
D20191090342

For a beginner, In order to have a correct, relaxed, confident, and comfortable posture at the piano or keyboard you need to keep in mind this three useful guide.

1. Correct Sitting Position

-First you need to adjust the height of your seat to ensure that your elbow are not too high or too low and your fingers can reach the keys.

-Your feet must be flat on floor. Make sure that you feet can reach the paddle and when one of your feet pressing the paddle, your other feet slightly close at the back to the other one that is pressing the paddle.

-After adjusting the height of your seat, please put you seat not too close or too far from the piano. Put it where you find comfortable.

-After that sit in the middle of the piano. Your body must not bend because that will put your hand in the wrong posture. Sit tall but not stiff. Slightly lean forwards but make sure not too close towards the piano.

-Sit in the middle of your piano. Make sure that you try to reach the last keys of your piano by crossing your right hand to the left and your left hand to the right. If your hands can reach the last keys of the piano. Then you got the correct posture.

2. Hands

Your hands position play a big role too in curving your fingers.

 - For Instance, when your elbow are too low and you try to play the piano, you will find it uncomfortable, hard to move your finger freely.

-Make sure your hands slightly high so that when your playing the keys you are more likely to reach the furthest key comfortably.

3. Curving Fingers

For a beginner they may have a problem to curve their finger and tend to be stiff while playing the piano. So this are some of the tips so that you will be able to curve your finger comfortably while playing the piano.

- Firstly, try to hold things that have circle form such as bottle, small ball. When you have a grip of this things, it will helps you to naturally form a C-shape. If you try to place your hand over the keys, that your correct position.

- Imagine you are holding the small ball when you are practicing. Make sure your finger are not stiff. Do not put fingers in tense.

-Practice this daily and you will likely to improve and make curving fingers naturally.

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

I love to hear every Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) pieces. His works quite much challenging. One of the most interesting pieces and my favorite is from Moment Musicaux no 4 in E Minor. I did read somewhere that he wrote this pieces after he got robbed on the rain and cost him greatly financially. When I heard for the first time I only feel the superficially but yet still read on the score’s emotionally. With the E minor key is a suitable as that key mostly shows an emotion like remorse, The pieces start with a very strong spiral feeling with very loud like its show some traumatic experience and with the left hand sustainably play like emotional unstable like the narrative try to say he is worried about something to happen. I feel the pain, anxious or the worrisome from context of that song like somehow in the middle from that pieces, it shows a mezzo-forte or the sound from quite to loudest and quitter again i feel the narrative try to calm and make sense the situation since whatever incident happen to him. The pace of this pieces also kind of shows a heartbeat especially from left hand part with most of the note played with accent from the right hand to show how he always remember that incident. The ending is quite the same but this time around he feel like he need to go on with his life and he will try to forget it. Apart from this, I did change the scenery with that song by looking it into more deeply from one’s stress and depressing and it somehow shows perfectly to what they are feel. When I hear this pieces it is shows something new from Rachmaninoff, although he wrote so many pieces as hard or familiar like this , but this take me to another level of understanding this pieces.

*Listen to the pieces at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQw3DvqEbxI

For someone who like to hear and play a pieces from a minor key, my other favorite pieces is from Russian pianist, Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857); Nocturne in F minor “La Separation”. Most of a nocturne I hear is about a dreamscape kind of mood and it made it to look like almost fantasy dreaming. For this pieces, it is still feeling like dreamscape kind of fantasy but it look almost turn into reality. I can depicted from this pieces is about a lovers bemoaning their impending separation and not realizing they will never see each other again yet they know enough the separation will happen. By saying so, if we look into the beginning of the pieces, they remind themselves in the good days about how beautifully the relationship when it begun but i can feel his sensitivity every time the narrative comeback into reality or about what will happen later. Every slur or tied note on the pieces show how the narrative try to slow down the time and keep longing in the dream sequences. Which the next progression on the pieces, the narrative deep diving more into the dream by thinking what happen to him or to his lover when all of this happen and every possibility of “what if..” moment. The arpeggios or the broken chord really add the colour of his dream by showing how his heart beating from it. The pieces continues by making it increasingly loud with a little bit faster tempo to shown the narrative need to accept it somehow and comeback to the reality and appreciate it while it lasts instead. The pieces ends with the narrative trying to hold a days until the separation begin. I really enjoy the deep emotional or how delicacy from this song. I’m already starting to learn this pieces I have to admit that this song is not that easy to play especially to interpret the feeling to what it supposed to be. In addition, Glinka could have used this theme to craft a great opera.

*Listen to the pieces at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnw8-YnHWeU

My favourite pieces is Fur Elise which is composed by Beethoven. He was born on december 16 1770 in Bonn Germany . He died on march 26 1827 in viena, Austria. Fur elise is one of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s most popular compositions. It is usually classified as bagatelle, but it is sometimes referred to as an Albumblatt. The score was published in 1867 a years after the composer death. The song was made by Beethoven because his love was rejected by a girl that she loved. I love to hear this piece because i can feel the pain of being rejected by someone you love. The song is very romantic and made in classical style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfF0zHeU3Zs

The second pieces that I love the most is Rondo Alla Turca by Mozart. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 which is also a greatest composer and pianist of all time. This pieces, Rondo Alla Turca popularly known as the "Turkish Rondo" which is more to classical style is actually the third and final movement from his Sonata No. 11 K331 for piano . The pieces was composed in 1783 which was in Classical period. I love to listen to this pieces because it is in minor key and it sounds like a marching song. It is also considered as intermediate level which is also challenging for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeEmGvm7kDk

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

Playing a piano with a right technique is a must to all the pianist including me. This is to ensure that when we play the piano our brain can take a pace from what we trying to learn. As for me, i will start first with polishing all scales from major, minor, arpeggios etc. Next for my fingering exercise, i always practice with Hanon: The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises book. It is good for strengthen up my finger and my brain to play more efficiently. I might as well find another book or eBooks from internet for another version or reference to exercising my fingering technique.

Before i working on the pieces, usually i will practising my sight reading as much as i can since i always have a bit problem with my sight reading skills especially on these days. I usually will working from the simplest one to the hardest one as long as it is still from my range/grade. Choosing the right pieces is considerable need to look at too. As for now, i am working on the new pieces from Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque IV: Passepied. What i do is first, I will study the basic thing like the piece’s dynamic, articulation, tempo etc. next i will study the right finger for each note and play separately first to make sure i familiar with the sound and tempo. As for the tempo i will started to play slower and gradually to the original tempo. In addition, i usually recorded myself while playing piano so i know at which part or which section i need to look into and fix it.

The most important pianist and all musician always need to have is discipline. As for me, i usually take 3-5 hour per day and 2 or 3 times per week. Since i am not a major in music, i always try regularly play piano and my regime is like i will play both either one and half hour, two hour or two and half hour (depending my free time) for all scales and sight reading and the pieces. For the pieces, i will practicing for 3 pieces; one that i already knew and play before, one from my favourite pieces and one for the pieces i never played before. I will take those 3 to 5 hour straight with resting in the between of divided hour to practicing my piano skills to keep it fresh in my mind.

I set my own practice time.

- Firstly, I would choose the most suitable time in a day to practice. Usually I would practice in the morning. I would take 1 to 2 hours to practice. The more time you practice, your skills will improve eventually. Make sure to set your practice time properly. If possible practice without any disruption that can ruin your spirit to practice. In my case, I would prefer practice with a friend that have more knowledge about piano than myself.

2. Practice scales

Try practicing all of the scales to train your fingers. Your fingering would improve so much that you would not have the time to think which keys to press. your fingers would naturally play the piano with the right posture and scales. Try to play the piano with both hands. In my experience, my left hand could not adapt quickly with the fingering so I try to play with both so that I can play the scales with the right fingering. You can start by playing the piano from slow to fast. For a beginner like me i tend to play much slower than my friend because I always get confuse with fingering but it is okay because when you always practice the scales you would naturally play with faster tempo.

3. Try to play piano while singing

Choose a random song to play. You can practice with the song that you have choose and try to write what chords that had in the song. This can boost your confidence to play the piano. You will be proud and enjoy the result later when you practice with more passion. Playing and singing at the same time actually not easy because you are multitasking, it takes time to truly master it. But by doing this you can improve so much. Try to play the basic or simple chord at the beginning. Try it with many more song so that you are familiar with the scales and chords.

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin

D20191086774

As everyone know, sight reading is the one of the big challenges need to be play by musicians and this include for pianist. Not everyone have a gifted to sight a score perfectly in one swoop, rather they had struggled enough that leads to de-motivation or some of them need a rigorously training session to master the sight reading. Fear not, with a right technique and right plan will make you to take a right path and start practicing again.

Be familiar with a basic thing on the keyboard

For a starter, I need to emphasize that you need to figure it out your fingering technique on the keyboard. To do this, I always start to play a scales first so I know where or what finger should I put on the keyboard based on the score without you need to see the keyboard. My teacher once said that “the less distraction you put on the sight reading, the better”. If you keep looking the score and look at your finger back and forth, you probably will lose the focus on the note that you need to play.

Choose a right score for sight reading

In my opinion, examine your sight reading material is important to make sure you on the right score so you know which level you can start with easily. For myself, I would prefer to play a score start from easily to the hardest one that I can play repeatedly for each level of that score. To do that, start looking and study at the pieces like the rhythm, key signatures tempo and etc. Simple rhythm with simple key signature and tempo usually are the one that we can look as an easier way to start sight reading

Familiar with the scores

By meaning familiar with the scores is to memorize how it should be play or how it sound. To do this you do not need to follow the original tempo at first but you can start slowly like familiar with the left hand first and follow by the right hand. When you comfortable enough you can start play very slowly both hand and let see from which point you need to be improve more. By doing so, you need to mark any point or any important details that you need to emphasize or to look into on the score so you can do better next time you play it again

Although for the beginner player, sight reading is a hardest thing for them to do as they are not yet familiar and comfortable enough to play or right guessing which key need to press correctly without to the score and your finger back and forth. Daily practicing is a must if you want to play fluently. You need to put the safety net out of the way you playing a piano not drastically but slowly adapt our mind to play without it. We are learn something to make a mistake, actually it is good to make a mistakes because from that point we can fixed our weakness so we can do better in the future.

Some people can read the sheets moderately while others are very slow to read it while playing the piano. In this case, i will share my 3 tips on how to improve our sight reading. I do this a lot during practicing with the keyboards and I find out that this help me to become a good sight reader.

1.Play Slowly

You have to know what key you should press. When you figure it out what keys to press, you will immediately know where to press. Do not rush, if you can play faster that is good but try to play it slowly at the beginning, you will naturally play it more faster from time to time. As you will likely to get nervous when using metronome because you have to follow the right countings, try to play without it. If you stop halfway, practice again form the beginning. Do not panic and try again.

2.Get to know your music

Study your score sheet to figure out the key signature, time signature, notes pattern. Take just a moment of your time to figure it out all. Playing the score without knowing the exact key signature or time signature or even the notes pattern will likely make you stress or unfocus. So figure it out all first before playing the piano. Use pencil to mark the notes that you don’t know or likely to forgot.

3.Practice consistently

Practice is a must to improve your sight reading. Without practice you will lack of in sight reading notes. When you practice, get the chance to really know and remember the score. Set your time to practice sight reading only. You will improve more and able to play the music score much better and faster.

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

When playing piano, rhythm and tempo are important to look up on the scores. Each scores has a different tempo and rhythm. If anyone still cannot differentiate between the tempo and rhythm is, tempo is the speed or how fast or slow that pieces should be. Some pieces will mark a symbol example like “♪=80” it show the player need to play speed at 80 on eighth note and some pieces will give player a direction of tempo like “Allegro” or “Andante”. Meanwhile, rhythm is the pattern of movement that the pieces should be. The symbol will me mark at the time signature like “3/4” or “6/8”. Lower numeral usually represented as one beat (per unit) and the upper numeral usually represented as how many beat at one bar should be play.

Most of the time, the beginner player tend to make a mistake by overlook at the rhythm and tempo rather just play inefficiently even sometimes myself will overlook about this matter. Also, sometimes player tend to confused with how to play this rhythm or how fast it should they play the tempo and the result will be the same which they cannot play fluently by mixing those two component. To have a perfect or right rhythm and tempo what am I going to do is practicing with the metronome. If the pieces was hard enough, metronome can easily track our rhythm and tempo when playing. For the simple pieces, we can use the “clap” or “ta-daa-ta” or “1 e + a” technique.

For this I will using the Track 1 by Pam Wedgwood from bar 1-4. First, I will examine the tempo and the rhythm. The rhythms show that this pieces is a quarter beat and each bar got 4 beat per bar. For the tempo it shows that the pieces need to play at speed 120 on quarter note. Before I using the metronome I would simply make my own clap rhythm to that respectively bar, like example on the bar one, the beat one the right hand is “1, 2 n, 3 n, 4” the bar 2 is “1 n, 2 n, 3, 4” and both bar got a whole rest note on the left hand. At the bar 3 is the same like bar 1 but this time the both right hand and left hand got same manner of beat which is “1, 2 n, 3 n, 4”.and the bar 4, the right hand got a whole rest note while the left hand “1 n, 2, 3-4”. For the tied note at bar 1 and 3, no need to be play but only count as 2 n beat only. At bar 4, minim beat count as 2 beat.

Just because the tempo is 120, does not mean we need to play at the precise tempo instead I would dial way back like far back to the tempo I can play comfortably. I usually set the metronome at 40-60 bpm and will gradually to the original tempo once I can catch the tempo and the rhythm. Also since I do not get used with the pieces I usually play the scale using their key signatures. For this pieces the key signature is C major. So in between of the pieces, I will revised back by playing a scale using the rhythm from that pieces with the metronome.

*Picture as shown below

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

In the music instrument especially in piano's scores, articulation is one of the items or things that we need to look into. Usually this item is made to give an extra "colour" to the pieces or to show an expression and the relation between to notes. By definition, articulation is a playing style that affect length or how several note in relation to each other. As we know there are so many kind of articulation on the music scores such as sforzando, staccato, marcato (accent), staccatissimo etc. But we going to discuss about the different between the slur and tie.

Slur is a type articulation that needs to play in connected and smooth manner. This annotation could be two or more notes of the same or different pitch or it could be as far one note to another bars depending on the pieces we will play. While tie, is a articulation that show two notes of the same pitch. When the annotation show a tie, the first note will be played and held for the duration of both notes depending on what time signatures or beat of that pieces. These two are a very common musical marking we always see on the pieces and it is drawn as an arc-shaped line connecting to other notes depending whether it is slur or tie.

Most beginner pianist is confused between these two articulations. The way I see this, for slur, I would think that this annotation will be different to each arc will be point or it will simply jump and move far from the first note it marks. In addition, this articulation will never be at the same pitch and it probably will point from next two notes to the far as it want. The things with slur, we do not and cannot held the notes and it must be play accordingly.

For tied notes it is different from the slur. Ties only happen when the note sit next to each other whether on the same bar or next to the bar. Generally, tie is bind together so in the music context, tied notes acts as one note with their rhythmic values added together. This would mean when I see a tied note, I need to hold and count together the note has been tied till the next note (depending on the time signature and beat). The tied notes will always be place at the same pitch and the same note.

*Picture illustration as shown below

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

There is a lot articulation that can be happen on the pieces and sometimes it can confusing the player especially to the one that not familiar with the sign or symbol given for example like staccato, marcato staccatissimo accent, tenuto and legato. Each of this articulation will give a different effect when it played. This time we will talking about the different between staccato and legato. As we all know, staccato is literally mean detached or “shortened” which mean when we need to play in a short note while legato means “connected” which mean that we need to play connectedly or smoothly to each note it pointed.

The things with staccato is we will see the symbol like a “dot” on above or below note depend on where the direction of the notes pointed. Usually when i see this articulation, I simply think that this need to be play like “tipping toe” as for each note the sound will be heard separately and follow by a short silent. Legato in other hand, usually it only show a sign like “legato” below or above the bar of the pieces that need to played plus it associated with the slur or tied notes depending on the pieces. For me, legato need to be play with no breaks meaning each note need to “swing together” or connected to each other without. In addition, the slur or tied notes is the way to guide a player to remind that this particular bar need to be play smoothly. If staccato need to be play with short silent, legato makes a transition from note to note with no intervening silence.

As for practices, I usually use these two articulation when I practicing my scales back and forth. I also use this for practice my fingering technique book. For legato, it is much simple like you just need to relax your hand, wrist and play slowly and try to play more smoothly. With helps like metronome plus I’m playing on the right fingering, you can hear the legato and how it sounds. As for staccato, our hand and wrist position is important to make it sound detached. I always making sure that Im not letting my hand rise too high. Too much high will make play the next note more intensely rather just play detached. I also to making sure that I keep my body still and comfortable so my hand and my wrist are more easy to move as any big movement from arm and shoulder will not produce a staccato sounds and only make slow you down. Staccato alsow can be practice.

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

There is a lot of genre found in every pieces of music. Ever since the age of romanticism happen, all the composers try to expressed in every detail of emotions on their writing and they growing and diversified the genre ever since. Any instruments need to portrayed a good sense of emotion or genre and piano is the one of the best instrument that can delivered such a powerful mood for each genre they can expressed and offered. As a basic part in the music, almost everyone only be listening either on the happy mood or the sad one and this may applicable when we want to pick up a song from a piano pieces even for myself when i choosing for my next pieces to practice. There is a certain criteria or factor that might be considered for one song to be in the sad mood or the happy one.

Let’s start with the genre that i like most which is a song from a sad pieces. In my opinion, three factors that makes a pieces sad are the tonality which what key signature they used, genre which the performance direction itself and also tempo. Tonality is the key signature or scales that used in one’s music. Usually sad pieces, the composer will always choose the minor key to express the mood, i might add that to make it interestingly sad they would play around or improvised it from the enharmonic scales due to the raised from the 7th note. I think it makes the pieces make a solemnly sad. Next, the genre or performance direction. Each of pieces will directly us to play what kind of mood of those pieces would be. As for the sad pieces, they probably choose a mood or genre such as “lacrimoso”, “grave”, “traurig” or “grieve”. As we all know all this example refer for us to play in the sense or mood of sad and this is where it got factor number three which is the tempo. As a sad pieces, there will always in the slow pace, probably from the adagio to the moderato, at 40 to 60 BPM per beat at best.

Happy pieces on the other hand, three factors that makes it sound happy are the rhythm, articulation and of course the tonality. For the happy pieces, it contra from the sad pieces. As the tonality, they usually will pick from a major keys. Any major keys will make a pieces sounds levitated and as adventurous as it may be. Another two factors might work together to make a sounds perfectly happy. As for rhythm, happy piece would be more into smooth and consistent rhythm or a pace that express happiness and peace or I would say a mood to dance a “happy tunes”. For the articulation, I would see more into the pitch and the volume which is the happy pieces tend to have a relatively high note as in the range that we always sing as well as dynamically would changes in the process or the journey of that pieces. This would be confused with any other genre but when you hear the happy pieces, you can differentiate from any those genre and there is a distinction range that make certain pitch and volume to be in “happy” mood.

Muhammad Ijmal bin Zaharin
D20191086774

Chopin is one of the greatest composer that I always adore with how his way of imaginative, creative thinking. Hence, one of my favorite pieces all the time was his Concerto no. 2 in F minor, 2nd movement. With a strings accompaniment makes it mixing with so much emotion dwelling in the narrative life. As I said before, I am more into a minor key pieces and this pieces really somehow shows or feel like the narrative have so many question yet there is no answer he can find but the way he resolve this unspeakable feeling is to reminisce every moment of this life and cherish it while it last.

The opening of this pieces can be show as how the narrative want to share his feeling to everyone who may someday would read his writing. He started with his writing with saying “Have you ever been with someone so long, so long you got attached and today those person is longer with us in this world? Have you ever think what would it be or how to feel or how to react this kind of tragedy?”. He continues with how great his life with that person during his or her lifetime. How he hold every cherish moment with that person for as long as he live. When he was with that person when he or she was alive, this question is already came in his mind like “how i cannot imagine one day that you will no longer in my life, how i cannot fathom the fact that when that time has come, you will leave me with our memories together; how you hold my hand, how big is your smile. how you looking into my eyes...” he denied it the thought at some point and keep on live his life.

One fine day, tragedy happen and it happens without he prepared to come up with a term the fact that what he ever think all this time has come to reality. This is where his world crushed into pieces and this is where all those point he made all this time reimburse but this time he cannot grasp any feeling yet only the memories came to play on his mind. The sadness is there but it is not focusing only to be cry out loud. The thing what makes he upset is how he regret not to spend so much time even longer with that person, how he should asking his or her wellness. He continue; “Have you ever been with someone so long, so long you got attached and today those person is longer with us in this world? I always think of this but o’ how i do not expect this day would come to my life. We always been together. We always sharing our feeling. We always promise to look up each other but we are falling apart and starting to neglected our feeling. We had to go in different way. Until today you are no longer with me, how i missed how great we are, how great we can be. Now you only left me nothing but your voice, your laugh and all the pictures we taken all this time”.

This thought kept play on his mind but as a human, sooner or later he need to come up with a term and let it go. The pieces ends his writing by saying “appreciate what you have in this world while it yours. Do not waste any more time because to have a regret feeling is not the best you can have. Regret is something we would feels everyday but to have one with point of no return is so devastated. We might never know what happen tomorrow let alone in future as we never know who will leave from our life tomorrow and it could be today right in this moment”

*Listen the pieces at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_dSI0gVbp0

Assignment 2 (Week 10)

Adeline Jetol
D20191090342

Greetings Miss Veggie and my fellow friends. As written in the forum week 10, beginner piano player often have problems with rhythm and tempo.Rhythm and tempo is very essential to make a pieces sound like what it must be. Listener will never get the exact feelings and mood that a pieces truly portray if we play it incorrectly or there are a lot of rhythm error and lost in tempo. Thus,I will give my tips on how I achieve the good playing of rhythm and tempo in Track 1 pieces.

The term rhythm has more than one meaning. It can mean the basic, repetitive pulse of the music, or a rhythmic pattern that is repeated throughout the music. It can also be referred to the pattern in time of a single small group of notes. In the other hand, tempo can be defined as the pace or speed at which a section of music is played. Typically, the speed of music is measured in beats per minute, or BPM. For example, if you listen to the second hand on clock, you will hear 60 ticks or in musical terms, 60 beats in one minute. People often made mistakes in rhythm and tempo when playing piano pieces, such as wrongly counting a 3/4 bar as 4/4 bar which is a rhythm error. Also rushing and unsteady when playing from bar to bar( not following a steady tempo).

So today I am going to tell you how I practice to achieves correct rhythm and tempo. I chose bar 1 from Track 1.

Rhythm
So the first thing that we need to do is figure out the key and time signature. Look at the key signature there’s only one flat which is the b flat. So the key signature is F Major and the time signature is 4/4 meaning 4 crotchet beats in a bar. After that we are going to change the melodies into rhythm. This is really helping if you're really having hard time on reading the rhythm. Draw out each of the note in bar 1 into rhythm and the then sing or count the rhythm with correct beats and counting. This can be done by using number to see the countings of each note. For the crotchet we are going to count as 1 after. The following quaver is 2, where its next quaver we call it "and". The quaver at the end of the slur will be count as 3 which we don't have to play and then the last one is 4. After that, you can try play it on the piano with the pitches if you want.

Tempo
When you want to perform specific compositions, you have to remember that they have been written with a specific tempo. This means it is expected that you play them at that same tempo as well. To do this it’s recommended that you practice with a metronome. For track 1, the tempo is 120 bpm which is considered as Allegro with its genre funky.

If you are finding the rhythms challenging to play in time, reduce the tempo on the metronome. You keep counting in exactly the same way but it should be easier to get each note perfectly in time. Then as you practice and improve you can gradually increase the speed of the metronome beat until you reach the target tempo.

Adeline Jetol
D20191090342

WEEK 11
TOPIC : ARTICULATION
(TIES VS SLUR)

Greetings Miss Veggie and my fellow friends. I'm Adeline Jetol and I will explain about the forum 11. The question goes
"What is the difference between staccato and legato? Describe in your own words. After that, demonstrate with or without using piano, on how you practice staccato and legato correctly."

There are many articulations we will find in a piano pieces especially when we are leveling up in piano studies. One of the most frequently confused by the beginner piano students is the term of staccato and ties. I admit that I always confused with the these articulations because they use the same symbol which is a slightly curved line among the melodies. Somehow, this confusing part can be solved very quickly if we notice the small details on the differences between them.

Ties

Firstly, the ties is used to connect a note next to each other where they lay at the same stave (the same pitch). The using of ties will add the note value of both note where the second note will not be played. Instead, both of the note’s value will be added up making the duration of the note longer with just one press. So, we can say that ties only can be used for the notes that sits next to each other and both are in the same pitch. So, when we see ties, do not play the second note that was tied. Just hold the duration of the note since the first note tied.

Slur
For slur, it is used to indicate how a melody or a phrase should be played. Slur simply represent legato or play the melody smoothly and sounds like it was connected when we play the following note. Rather than playing the melodies normally, playing a melody which uses slur makes it more beautiful and charming because of the connected flows of notes. This require us to play the pieces in a manner opposite to staccato playing. We can achieve the playing of slur by making sure that the flow of the notes is connected and followed right after the previous note.

Adeline Jetol
D20191090342

WEEK 12

TOPIC : STACCATO AND LEGATO

Hello everyone, I am Adeline Jetol. This week forum topic is about articulation. So today I’m going to teach the Staccato and Legato. The forum question is “what is the difference between Staccato and Legato”.

So Staccato is another Italian word that means “sharply detached or separated from the other notes”. the symbols to indicate that a note or chord is to be played with staccato articulation is a dot above or below the notes(or chord). When a musician sees a staccato marking he/she play the note with a very short, detached attack. This means that the note will not ring out but instead will have a very quick decay.

The meaning of legato is the music is to be played in a smooth and flowing manner, without any breaks between notes. Playing the piano in legato style means that each individual note has some connectivity to the next note. In written music there are symbols that tell the musician the he/she is to play a particular musical passage in a legato manner. These symbols are called slurs or phase markings

When you play staccato just pretend that you are touching things that are hot because of the heat, for examples, touching a hot cauldron or kettle that still boiling. Apply it while you play staccato on piano. Your finger immediately leaves the key without sustaining any sound like when you remove your hand immediately from touching the hot cauldron. Depending on how you play, it can be depressed all the way down before release or halfway down. The faster you can get your finger off the key, the more time your brain has to look to the next key, eliminating errors and adding a smoothness while you are playing.

Producing a completely smooth and connected tone at the piano is one of the trickiest things to achieve. So this is some of the way to play legato. First, rely more on finger pedaling. Finger pedaling is the idea of holding down certain notes longer than their notations to simulate the effects of the sustain pedal without actually using the device itself. Finger pedaling is highly effective as it creates a seamless, smooth, and connected sound.

Always remember playing staccato is a lot like a woodpecker pecking its beak on a tree-short, jumpy pecks. You can tell which notes are staccato as they have dot below or above the note head. As for legato, playing legato is playing the notes smoothly one after the other. Play with one key after the other, but only release your finger once you have pressed the next one.

That is all from me , Thank you.

Adeline Jetol
D20191090342

WEEK 13

TOPIC : EMOTIONS OR MOOD

Hello Everyone, I am Adeline Jetol. So this week forum is about emotion or mood. The question is “what elements in piano piece, that makes it sound like a happy piece or a sad piece ? Explain 3 factors that make a piece sound happy and also 3 factors that make a piece sound sad” So today I’m going to explain about emotion that makes a pieces sound happy and sad.

First you must know what is emotion. Emotion is something that causes sad, happy ,angry or fear. An intense mental state that arises subjectively rather than through conscious effort and is often accompanied by physiological changes.

There are 3 factor that make a piece sound sad and happy.

3 factor that make a piece sound sad is ;

1.The term of minor chord

-minor key is heard as sad. The minor key is opposed to the major key and it’s perceived by us without being aware as if there was something wrong, hence sadness or restlessness.

2.Slow tempo

- if we realize, sad song always had slow tempo in it. Tempo refers to the speed, or pace, of a musical piece. As with modes, tempo is also used as a way to express emotions. Slow music potraying sadness. Now it should be noted that fast and slow tempos can be used to indicates other emotion.

3.Low pitch

-Low pitch always indicates for sadness. If we hear a song that has lower pitch and the tempo also slow that when we know that indicates for sad emotion.

3 factor that make a piece sound happy

1.The terms of Major chord.

-Major chords are tied to happiness. Its produce happy sounding chords. I remember the chord progression I, IV and V(1-4-5). Each one of these chords is a major chord, and they work together in any order to create a happy sound.

2.Fast tempo

- Music with fast tempo evoked positive emotion, such as happiness, excitement, delight and liveliness. For example up-tempo is aterm used to describe music that is cheerful and has a fast tempo.

3.High pitch

-It is like when we are talking, when we talk with high and lively pitch it shows that you are very happy or excited. In music, we can hear that the song with high and lively pitch produce a happy sounding.

That is all from me, Thank you.

As for the final forum, the topic given is about imagination. Every musician must have the ability to imagine so that you can be one with music.

So today I’m going to share about one pieces which is a modern composition titled
“River flows in you”. I'll be talking about the background of this song and what I feel as what I imagine during I listen to this beautiful masterpiece.

This song was composed by Yiruma a korean pianist. Yiruma real name is Lee Ru Ma. Born in 1978, he started playing piano at the age of five and moved to London when he was 10 to pursued his study at the Purcell School of Music. He later attended King’s College,London where he studied composition and released his first album. Internationally known, as he played on many sold-out concerts in Asia Europe and North America.

The song is from one of his album First Love, released in 2001. The song is quiet some time now. The piece written in A major. Structured more like a pop song than a classical piano composition. The title of the songs can be defined as finding your inner music, falling in love or the feeling of desperately needing to find something. The pieces become more famous when the song was featured in the “Twilight” movie as the soundtrack.

The song actually has mix feeling it can be either sad and happy. The song start slowly and gently progresses with playful speed. In my imagination, it feels like you are walking near a river and you just appreciating the nature beauty. The sky reflection on the rivers and the sun’s rays. It feel like you are escaping the busy life of town and find calmness in the nature. The wind are blowing your hair smoothly and your closed your eyes to feel the cold breezes. This song will most likely give calmness in everyone heart.

https://youtu.be/7maJOI3QMu0

Thank You.
