Eight women in England and Wales are killed each month by a current or former partner.

One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime and more than 105,000 children are living in homes where there is high-risk domestic abuse. 

Join Northumberland's parkrun takeovers to launch the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign and wear a touch of orange to show your support for a brighter future.

To ensure that the event runs smoothly a number of marshals are required for each of the five parks. If you are able and would like to get involved in this event by volunteering as a marshal, please contact Angela Watt as soon as possible by emailing angela.watt@northumberland.gov.uk 

A briefing session for volunteer marshals will be held in advance of the event in November and invites for this will be sent out in due course. 

The campaign has been running since 1991 and is used by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. The campaign asks people to take action over the 16 days. 

In support of this civil society initiative, the United Nations Secretary-General launched in 2008 the campaign UNITE by 2030 to End Violence against Women, which runs parallel to the 16 Days of Activism. 

Every year, the 16 days of action campaign focuses on a specific theme. There is also a different theme each year to mark White Ribbon Day on the 25th of November. Planning is already well underway here at NCC for this year's programme of events!

Violence against women and girls is rooted in harmful masculine norms. Starting with men, we must address the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a fear of violence for women in their day-to-day lives.

This years White Ribbon Day is about encouraging men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other to change and transform harmful cultures and role model positive behaviour Gender equality is key to making this culture change happen. Gender equality is achievable if men and boys understand and assume their responsibility as allies.

Unite with us to reclaim our spaces, protest against the sexual harassment and fear women experience on our streets and demand an end to violence against women and girls!

Bring your voices, placards, whistles, friends and family and join us to make some noise!

This year’s march is women-only. We hope to be joined by cis-women, Trans women and non-binary people who identify that women’s spaces are right for them. Children (including boys up to age 14) are welcome.

We recognise that women may have PAs or carers who are men and understand that in these circumstances, these men may need to join our women-only march to ensure equality of access to all women. We ask that all who support Reclaim the Night, respect our call for a women-only march.

The rally at the Baltic Square is open to all and we welcome people of all genders to join us, this includes men and boys of all ages.

Full march route: meet at the Bigg Market 6pm. Start marching 6.15pm. Total distance 0.9 miles.

Bigg Market - Highbridge - Grey Street - Dean Street - Side - Sandhill - Quayside - Gateshead Millennium Bridge - Baltic Square.
Shorter/accessible march route: meet on Sandhill/Quayside junction (behind Hard Rock Cafe) next to the giant NE1 plant pots at 6.20pm. Total distance 0.5 miles.
