We are inviting you to explore Crip, as a term that is entangled within a rich history of discourses and meanings. Whilst crip might denote a direct and personal relation to disability, we ultimately do think that crip mentality is a universally adoptable one. Any one can be crip if you have the guts ( / stoma or other stomach based equipments). To adopt a crip mindset, to begin cripping our perspective on the world, is to begin dismantling the ableist, colonial, capitalist, structure embedded in the fabric of our society.

Crip is to disability theory what Queer is to gender and sexuality theory. They are defined by being undefinable. A pure refusal to be defined, dancing through labels without settling.

We want the crip journal to extend as an invitation for those interested to find ways of documenting experiences of Crip within the everyday. Using the format of a journal as the primary example but disabling it and reforming it to become something new and individual to whatever and whichever crip folk takes hold of it. We each take hold of a metaphorical journal and allow it to mould and transform over the span of a week. Maybe this is a single event that you translate into a sculpture as a reflective exercise at one point in this week or if you create a graphs of sorts that you log details of each of your days into. Whatever feels appropriate and to whatever degree, small or large, text or sculpture, planned or spontaneous.

Observing our lived crip experiences over a week, logging it and transforming the data into a writing, drawn, sculpted, sew, digital, musical diary of sorts.

Your journal is what you make of it, think crip, use this to crip your understanding of the journal and mould it about you and your cripness.

A play on the word Cryptography

“the process of hiding or coding information so that only the person a message was intended for can read it. The art of cryptography has been used to code messages for thousands of years and continues to be used in bank cards, computer passwords, and e-commerce.”

When encountering Criptography, we are appealing to the fact that the Disabled and by extension the Crip experience can be a quite isolating and individual. Through journalling we will each have the appeal to document a certain aspect that embodies the crip to us but might have no association to somebody else.

To engage in Criptography, is almost a reimagining of an event through the filtered lens of crip. We are cripping our data and transforming it past the boundaries that might arise in our days spent in ableist environments.
