I found it very interesting that mental health conditions/SUD is one of the leading causes of pregnancy related death with 15.0%. I remembered in class we talked about mental health being one of the biggest causes for death however I never imagined it was one of the biggest causes for pregnancy deaths also. Mental health pregnancy's related deaths were also determined to be 100% preventable

Pregnant individuals in rural areas are at higher risk for maternal mortality than their urban counterparts (Harrington et al., 2023) and are 9% more likely to experience severe complications and/or death (Kozhimannil et al., 2019).

Two themes of maternal and child health is location and postpartum. Black women that live in rural areas are more impacted with infant mortality than other races. This fact is due to obstetricians and other health care providers not wanting to work in rural areas because of the area and lack of pay. Another factor is COVID and declining numbers of healthcare due to burnout and etc.

My second point is postpartum care where women are released from the hospital one day or two days after birth even if there were risks during birth. This comes into question about insurance because hospitals cannot let you stay longer while in other countries like Korea there’s birthing centers allowing mothers to stay for a month to rehabilitate the mother back into health to ensure she’s okay to take care of the baby.
