Being articulate in the classroom literacy community

To be considered as literate or articulate in the classroom community, I have to obtain the ability to be respectful and polite in your language, quiet, and simple or basic. My verbal communication and body language when I am talking to my teachers or my friends in the classroom tends to be more respectful and polite so I don’t come across as rude and I give the person I’m talking with all of my attention. I also am empathetic when being social in the classroom so I can understand what my teacher or friend is saying. Also in the classroom I tend to be more self conscious of what I am saying because I don’t want to come across as rude or inarticulate. The words I select to use in the classroom are a more carefully chosen then the words I say when I am talking to my friends or at home because the consequences of saying something inarticulate are far greater. Also my volume of my voice in the classroom is quieter than when I am outside or with my friends or family because I don’t want to distract anyone from their work or interrupt the teacher. Additionally, the classroom environment is usually pretty quiet so I don’t want to disturb the classroom norms. Lastly, the classroom literary community is typically pretty simple. When I am communicating in a classroom environment I usually don’t diverge too far off of the ‘correct’ way to speak English. For example, I don’t use too much slang or incorrect grammar, etc.

Being articulate in the parkour and freerunning literacy community

To be understood when communicating in a parkour and freerunning community, I usually communicate with a more ‘complex’ form of English that is integrated from several other literacy communities, and is diverse. When I am talking to my coaches or friends at Tempest (the gym I go to for parkour and freerunning) I use a more ‘complex’ form of English with more slang and variety of words to describe the different moves and tricks. Without this added vocabulary it would be hard to communicate with the people in this environment. If you are articulate here then you would know the names to several different tricks in order to communicate efficiently with your coaches and friends. Since parkour and freerunning is a relatively new sport a lot of the moves are named after moves from other sports such as basketball and gymnastics. For example there is a move called the euro step which is a common move from basketball that the parkour community took to describe a move where you are hanging from a ledge and you step up the wall and turn behind you in order to reach a wall or ledge that is parallel to the wall you are jumping off of. Finally, the parkour and freerunning literacy community is actually quite diverse. In parkour there are 3 different events one might compete in: skill, speed, and style/flow. In each of these events there are different ways we might describe a move or a combination of moves. Also in a broader picture there are different styles and sports that relate to parkour and freerunning such as tricking or trampoline that also use different language and words to describe similar tricks.

The classroom literacy community is a wonderful place that I enjoy being in. One big reason I love the classroom community is that everyone is super polite and kind to me. It's nice to be able to share your thoughts without someone making a rude response back. I also enjoy that the classroom community is quite diverse and I get to meet new people and find out how they talk differently in the classroom from how I talk in the classroom. I also really like how the classroom community is very collaborative and we all work very well together. The classroom community is something that I thoroughly enjoy.

My favorite literacy community is the parkour/freerunning community. This literacy is my favorite because I love how everyone in it is super kind and you won’t find a single person that is mean or rude. Another thing I like about this community is the complexity. I enjoy being able to talk in a more creative distinct literacy where the words I am saying are not the typical English words. Additionally, I like how the literacy community is relatively new so I am able to create new words for new tricks that are not yet named. Finally, I like how the parkour literacy is made up of many other words from other sports to describe certain tricks.

Comparison between the classroom and the parkour/freerunning literacy communities

Although, the classroom and parkour/freerunning literacies are both very similar, they can also be vastly different. In a gym or parkour environment the people there are usually loud and energetic while in the classroom people are usually pretty quiet and mellow. Also, the parkour and freerunning literacy is more complex because of the amount of slang and extra vocabulary there is but the classroom is more basic and simple because the words being used are more ‘correct’ and less creative and expansive. But despite these differences you could argue that they are similar in some ways. One of those ways being diverse. The classroom literacy is very diverse due to all the different people and cultures that use it simultaneously and parkour and freerunning communities are very diverse as well from the different groups within the community. Another way they are similar is that the people are respectful and polite in both communities. People are generally nice and looking out for one another in both literacies.
